I loaded in a railing fence from Red Faction Groups into my level. Then I proceeded to highlight the brush, and copy and paste it till my railing is all done.

Now with the pasted copy of the railing, I joined it onto the railing, but ran into a problem. On close-up inspction of the brush, Red dosen't line up the railing correctly and the ends are a few millimetres out of alignment. I get this problem with small cylinder brushes as well when going into small detail.

I go into the smallest grid mode to move the brush to fix the problem, but it always moves the brush just a few pixles over too much and dosen't line up perfectly so the railing end looks slightly out and crooked.

So I hit CTRL-G and that did nothing, CTRL-O nothing. How do we line up brushes perfectly on the grid?

Help anyone?

Can we alter Red's grid size so we can get the measurement smaller than 0.03125 because that's not quite small enough !!

Red, full of little frustrations

Did you shrink the size of your grid to line up the fence? It may or may not help. If you've used you mouse to move it around at any point that can cause problems later.

The problem with cylinders is that they can have odd angles in them depending in the number of sides. The distance from one corner to another corner on the opposite side is not always a multiple of your grid size and so no matter how you play around with it you can't get it to line up. Even if you set tyhe grid very fine the problem can remain. Its possible to fix it by vertex editing but it can get very messy.

maybe if you were to delete the offending railing and recopy and paste then snap to the grid (control G) before you start any movement then only move with the arrow keys and not the mouse, dont know if it will fix but snapping to the grid before you move will give it more chance of aligning if the other brushes are snapped to the grid. Just make sure that the original one you loaded into your level is aligned to the grid correctly first or it will be a fluke to line it up

Yes I shrunk the grid size and no that didn't fix the problem. No, afraid not, even in vertex editing, I get the same thing, can't line up the vertex points exactly on each other, always going a few pixels out with the grid on it's finest setting, so I can't fix up my fence, this is a problem in Red, they the developers didn't put in a smaller grid size so we could fix this...

Tried doing that EvilNastyMan, it does not solve the misalignment problem..

Will someone check to see if Red ver 1.0 had a grid size smaller than 0.03125 because I think this is the reason why the default Red Faction Groups are slightly out of alignment on the grid... Violition might've had a full-working Red Editor when they created the retail levels that might've been using a special grid size smaller than 0.03125.

Basically what's happening is that thhe dimmensions of the brush ned to fit the grid size or they'll never align to the grid when u hit Ctrl+G

If the height of you'r cylinder is 2.07895 then try changing it to 2.0 so that u can align it to the 1.0 or less grid spacing

You get the drift... I a far too effing wasted to be even thinking about RED editor !!!

Right, well we're dealing with width, not height here, playing around with the width and the height in stretching the brush, looks like it's fixing the problem, but when I look on the other side, well not quite, still won't effin line up exactly right and you can see the jutting out becuase I can't change the CTRL - M grid size movements to get any finer than the smallest setting which is 0.03125 to correct that and changing width and height settings of the brush is still not changing the alignment to the grid properly, all I get is the brush width changing while it still stays stubbornly a few pixels out of alignment on the grid.

That's Effin Red for you...I wonder what these groups of brushes really are that Violition has, are they really a bunch of failed or bad brushes? You get alignment problems when using other people's brushes it seems but then again I get alignment problems when trying to perfectly align cylinders when they also go just a few pixels out of alignment of each other instead of being in the proper grid spacing.

Oh well the other way, is to just leave it as it is and just make the railing twice as big.

This railing from Red Faction's Groups I was using is actually a stretched square diamond, not cylinder shaped.

Does it have to perfectly align to the grid? If it is aligned to it's neighbouring brushes which, in turn are aligned to theirs... who cares about the damn grid?!! No-one will know if it is on the grid or not when playing it.
