When I was working on a brush like a mountain or some other object outside of my map to create background scenery, I found that red just refused to let me texture the brush on the outside when set to detail.
So the only way I could end up texturing it was to change the brush back to air and keep it on as detail, THEN red would allow me to texture the inside of the detail brush, and then swap the brush back to solid detail again once finished and the texture would appear on the outside.
Well I just found out how to get Red to texture the brush not on the inside but also on the outside but I had to use the fuse function to fuse a vertex of the brush to the level and then Red allowed me to start texturing the brush on the outside which it wouldn't allow me to do before.
Of course the other way around this is to just drag the offending brush into a huge air box in your main map and just texture everything as a normal solid brush and then swap the flags to detail when positioning it outside the map, whether it's a tower or a mountain instead of using fuse cause for some strange reason, RED won't always allow you to texture the outside of a detail brush that is by itself outside of your level space.
I remember having that trouble before when working with detail brushes outside of the map, got halfway to texturing my mountain and all of a sudden the texture function ceased to work and I couldn't highlight the rest of the faces.....
That's one thing they should've fixed.. |

So you made solid terrain outside your level brush in already solid virtual space?
That's an odd thing to do |

It's like cutting a solid brush with a solid brush... |

You have to remember that with RED you start off with a solid world and cut rooms out of it. Solid brushes only add back to what you've already cut. |

Ok, so that dosen't explain the question, why does Red refuse to texture detail SOILD brushes that are by themselves outside of your world map area, why dosen't it just allow us to texture a building sky line or something without having to fiddle around changing brush attributes to get Red to texture it?

If your making solid brushes, outside of your main air brush, then your making a solid from a solid. Make the brushes outside your world air brushes.
If RED is a solid world to begin with, you can't ADD more solid without subtracting air first. |
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car. |

Think of this way, you start out in red with a big solid block. Now think of this other way. You have a sold boulder and using the powers only seen in Star Trek, you beam another boulder inside the boulder. Now try and paint that inside boulder... |

Oh no, well I just do my brushes outside my world as air details and then texture them and turn it to solid detail and hey presto, solid brushes show up outside my world map.
- Fuse is okay, but like all Red options, buggy
