Yes because you didn't allow a pure transparent border around your whole image when you saved it. Make sure there is at least 1 pixel width of total transparency around your image, I usually go for a few pixels more and then save it as normal proportions but 32-bit.

hummm

Thank you mad ferrit. I will manage otherwise.

ok, i have been confused bout this one for a long time. in the decal properties, there is a box for \"tiling\". this never seems to work for me. at least it doesnt seem to. is this a feature that much like alot of REDs that is simply there to mess with us?
anyone???? i really need this.

No, I can't see that it does anything either. You would hope that you could tile your texture so that it appears more than once on one decal but it doesn't seem to work

Easy Decal in Paintshop Pro 7.0
by Foe & GrimReaper

Note: RED will not use decals made with Paintshop pro 8.0 for some reason, I have made alpha channels in paintshop pro 8.0 and Bryce will use them fine but they do not work right in red so that is why this tutorial is using Paintshop pro 7.0.

Step1: Click viewToolbars and make sure the boxes I have selected in fig1 to the right are the same as yours and click the close button.

Note: I have included the same picture as I use in this tutorial so you can follow along exactly.
Step 2: Open your image or create a new image in Paintshop Pro 7.0 and select the magic wand tool as shown in fig 1., and set a tolerance of about 25. as shown in the fig at the bottom.
Fig 1
Step3: Hold the shift key and start selecting the background of the image you want to be transparent as shown in Fig3: to the right. In this case all the black I want transparent so I have selected all the black background Note that the outline of the box is selected along with the image indicating it is the background that is selected and not the image itself.
Fig 2
Step4: Click “colorsSet Palette Transparency” as shown in Fig4 . Click yes if a warning menu pops up. Leave the default options on the next menu as shown in fig5 and click OK. Check the box that says “Set the transparency value to palette entry and make sure it is 0 as shown in fig6 then click OK.
Fig 4
Fig 5
Fig 6
Step5: Click Selections as shown in fig7:
Note that now the image is the only thing selected as indicated by the box not being selected anymore. See fig8:
Fig 7
Fig 8
Step6: Click Selections again and this time click “Save to Alpha Channel” as shown in fig9:
Fig 9
A menu will open up and it should look like the one in fig10, the main thing you need to do here is make sure that the part of the image that you want to be transparent is black and the part that you want to show is white, Note: If it is the opposite you need to go back and hit the invert button again. If it looks right then click OK. On the next menu it ask you to select a name for that channel, you can give it a name or just leave it as the default and click OK. Step7: Now go to “FileSave As” and save as a TGA file with 24 bit depth and uncompressed format.
Fig 10
Fig 11
One other thing you need to remember, make sure your file is of a size Red likes,
128x128, 256x256, 512x512 or any other size you need.
Hope this helps, and have fun!

i was wondering if anyone out there could make a similar tutorial for PHOTOSHOP im capable of doing it with the PSP7, but id like to try this out with photoshop. PSP7 doesnt give you the 32bit save option, unless you start out with an image thats already 32bit.

OK, Here\'s how I do it in Photoshop 7. There are a few variations on how you can do it, but I\'ve never had any real problems doing it this way...

Picture 1...

1. Firstly Open up your image in Photoshop 7. In this example we\'ll make a decal of the RF logo

2. Then Select your Magic Wand Tool. This is a clever tool that can cut shapes easily from plain backgrounds, You may need to use other tools to obtain your image depending on the background. This background is plain black so the magic wand will be fine

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Picture 2...

There are a couple of things to note in the next picture...

1. Tolerance - The tolerance lets you set how much leeway the magic wand will give you as far as picking up imperfections in it\'s selection. Ie it guages how tolerant it will be. The smaller the number the less tolerance, and any slight imperfections in the black will also be picked up. Here I am going to set it to 20 and that should let me select my RF logo easily.

2. OK now that you have set the tolerance you can click in the background of the image... The black area. You will notice that a dotted selection line appears around the borders of the black area on all sides. If you have areas of contention, ie. areas that it has picked up within the black that you want to discard then either increase the tolerance a little or use Shift+Left Click to select within those areas until there are no imperfections.

3. Now currently we have selected the black area, but it is the logo that we want to copy onto a transparent pallate. So right click on the selection and click Select Inverse as per the following image.

4. Now that you have the logo selected, click Ctrl+C to copy it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Picture 3...

1. Now we want to bring up a new canvass by pressing Ctrl+N. Photoshop will automatically offer to give you a canvass size of the last thing you copied, BUT VERY IMPORTANTLY we need at least a pixel of transparency around our image or it will smudge in RED Editor. So Increase the size of the canvass. I normally allow a good border of around 5 - 10 pixels just to be on the safe side

2. So in this instance I would make things a little bit easier and simply change the 2 values to 256x256, but if things were not quite so clear cut then just add 10 to each value, we can always resize the whole image at the end

3. Make sure you have Transparent checked at the bottom and it will bring up a transparent canvass (The grey and white chequered effect indicates transparency)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Picture 4...

1. Now simply hit Ctrl+V to paste our RF logo from the clipboard onto our transparent sheet.

2. We have a nice border of transparency that will ensure that our decal will not smudge in-game.

Re-Sizing

Remember that RED works with image sizes of multiples of 8 pixels. Most common is 256x256 pixels and if you want to make a long thin decal then do not out-weigh one side by more than a ratio of 8:1. I.e. 32x256 is acceptable but 32x512 might not be. (I stand to be corrected on that last point, but it is rare that you\'d need to do that anyways)

If you need to resize your image then now is the time to do so Simply goto Image >>>Image Size and uncheck Constrain Proportions if you need to resize an irregularly sized image. Click OK.

OK Finally.....

Goto File >>>Save As

You need to save it as a .tga/targa file in your User Maps >Textures Folder. Note Try to use exclusive names for your textures so that it doesn\'t cause texture glitches from other textures that are named the same. Eg I use [gold]\"mf_decal_texturename.tga\"[/gold] for mine.

Once you have selected the Save location and clicked Save it will ask you to verify the Colourdepth. This needs to be 32-bit for any transparent textures in RED, so check 32-bit and click OK.

Now simply add it to your decal ingame and enjoy

This was written quickly so post if there\'s any mistakes and I\'ll edit it

Ferrit you would have got a gold star if you had used an alpha channel.

Add an alpha layer in the channel pallette, delete your selection, then save as 32 bit tga. That way there is no need for transparency or new files.
If I ever get to where I am going, will I know when I am there?

Me neither, I never get their names. Usually the Channel palette hangs out with Layers.

In my PS version [5.5] it is on the bottom of the Channel palette and is called the 'Add New Alpha Layer' button. Once you click it, as well as the RGB channels, you also get an alpha channel. Search PS help if you get stuck, it is all in there.
