Fron RED editor's Help file:
It's easy to add custom texture maps to your Red Faction levels.
Texture Requirements:
All textures must be 24- or 32-bit .TGA (Targa) files. They must be a power-of-two in each dimension, no more than 256 pixels wide or tall. 32x32, 64x32, 256x256 are all okay. 133x64, 512x256 or 100x100 are not okay. Texture dimension cannot not have a ratio greater than 8 to 1 (e.g. 256 x 8 is not allowed)
Once you have your textures created, simply copy them to your \RedFaction\user_maps\textures\ directory, and run RED.
Enter Texture Mode using the Mode drop-down list, or by hitting SHIFT-T. In the texture category list on the left, choose the "Custom" category. It should contain your custom textures. If a texture does not appear in the editor, check that it meets the above requirements.
Any custom textures used in a level will be automatically included in the VPP packfile when you use the "Create Level Packfile" command. Please see the section on "Playing & Distributing Levels" for details.
Now are you having problems converting them to .tga format or are they the wrong size? |

I read somewhere that you can use this program to convert them to .tga format, if you don't have a program like photoshop.
Pic2Pic
Input file formats: BMP, EMF, GIF, ICO, JPEG, JPG, PBM, PCX, PGM, PNG, PPM, TIF, TIFF, TGA, WMF
Output file formats: BMP, JPG, PBM, PGM, PNG, PPM, TGA, TIF
System requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP, 0.4Mb free HDD space, 32Mb RAM, Pentium 90Mhz processor.
Did I mention that it was free.
BTW, I just downloaded it and installed it. Converted a .jpg to .tga with no problems and it was really simple. Just remember to choose what folder you want to to be sent to. You can always choose the texture folder in Red Faction to save you the time of having to move them there after they are converted. |

Good for you, but it makes it more difficult to align them(the textures) up.
Why go through all the pain of having a harder time while UV unwrapping?
Read the Help file in RED. It’s there for a reason. |

Here is an important notice if you are going to use Paint Shop Pro for your textures.
Use Paint Shop Pro 7. DO NOT USE ANY UPDATED VERSIONS LIKE PAINT SHOP PRO 8 or 9. Reason is because when you go to save your texture as a *.tga file in Paint Shop Pro 8, what happens is in RED, You will find some nasty colours or errors with the textures.
There has been no fixure or issue on to how to fix the problem.
Therefore I highly recommend you that if you are going to use PSP, use PSP7.
There are probley hundreds more other painting programs that you can buy or download Free trials. Just pick one that you think will suit your needs. |
