I agree with the general consensus of 2 with a mix of 1.
Loving the idea of having some involvement with how battles turn out rather than pure statistics!

I also quiet like the idea of bonuses for taking part in Seasons, but maybe make them not a large part. Such as, start with an additional X Gold. At the same time, the problem with this is the users who are already "good" and at the top of the league have a further bonus, making them harder to reach!

Instead you could alter the idea slightly and give out "Rewards" for certain categories.

-Most successful defenses
(+X% Defense bonus)

-Most successful attacks
(+X% Attacking bonus)

-Most amount of planets scouted
(+X% Scouting Range)

-Most populous planet
(+X% Growth on first 5 planets)

-Most developed planet
(+X% Gold/per planet)

-Worst massacre
(Defender gets +X% defense)
(Attacker gets +X% chance of Critical Hit)

etc...

Rewards for the top 3/5 players has been considered. Some sort of permanent record of your victory.

As for rolling stuff from one season into the next, I had considered letting players select a research to take into the next season from the starting set.

Same as last PC, you get a certain set of researches when you start playing. At the start of your second game you get to select one free research to immediately get from those you could otherwise start researching.

Not sure about letting that continue tho - after 10 game having 10 free researches for example. You could have players with real big stuff very early on. Thinking more of just always having one free research if you've played in the previous game.

Yeah, that's a slight issue, and the reason that I was worried about the strong becoming stronger.

Any possibility of ships levelling up? Veteran 1/2/3?

Except instead of a global "Veteran 1/2/3", you could earn exp by fighting a class type and then be more effective against a class type.
My Frigates destroy some Cruisers... in several battles, they then rank up, and gain +5% Crit. Hit rating (or something) against cruisers, but not other classes (until they level against them). You could then introduce research that helps to "train" more elite crew that start as Veteran 1, or that negate an enemies "veteran X" etc?

Also, maybe some sort of "rank" for the player. They get EXP throughout the game and slowly rank up. Similar to CoD style. Would get people coming back for more. You could even introduce a prestige mode, if you really wanted to. lol!

You're guessing future plans quite nicely Beat

With ships being far more "personal", the idea was that you could name each one. Was even thinking about selecting/naming captains (who then rank up as they participate in battles) - you could then transfer these experienced captains to other ships if you wish. So the ships themselves didn't rank up but their captains did (makes a little more sense!)

I did originally have this very ornate design of having more than just captains... eg weapons officer, helm etc. You'd have 5 or so "chief" personnel who would give bonuses to the ship in their own ways. However considering the amount of work needed to get just a basic game up and running, this plan is on the back burner - probably to be added at a later date but to begin with it'll just be a captain who ranks up in specific weapons (depending on what damage is dished out by the ship), maneuvering etc. Moving the captain would move their bonuses with them (so a ship with lasers only would see him level up in his laser usage - moving him to a ship with only plasma would be the same as getting a rookie captain in.

Researches to help would naturally be in There was 104 researches in the old game, 107 currently exist in this version - and there are various things from the old game that aren't featured at all yet. Plus all the new stuff (some in already relating to the new ship design/construction - classes are out, modular construction is in) and the game is going to be much bigger than before.

To give you some idea of the task still at hand, only 6 of the 107 researches actually have an in game effect so far - the rest are all placeholders!

I do like the player rank idea there, not something I'd considered. An extension of the "players gains a free research" idea...

Perhaps instead of just a "you played, get a free research" its a "you played, you gain +5 exp, you had 10 battles, +10 * 1exp, you have 6 planets at the end of the game +6 * 10exp.

You could then slowly level a player up... so level 1 is a standard newbie, level 2 gets you a free research at the beginning of each subsequent game you play, level 3 means you start with an extra 5k gold, level 4 means you get a veteran laser captain to start with, level 5.... etc etc. Idea being that each player could be level 2 with minimal effort in their first game, maybe a few more games before level 3 etc etc.

I do try!

I like the sound of that!

Just to clarify when I said about ranking up "you" as a player, I didn't essentially mean something with in-game benefits, but like customisable titles and "Rank" badges etc... Maybe Being able to unlock different colour ships/models (same stats though!) and maybe skins.

EG.
your "green lush planet" can be made to look like an Ice planet.
Your ships that are boring metal, could be altered via a skin to have spikes and blood covering them. etc...

however being able to gain ingame benefits could be neat, but they shouldn't be a game breaker!

As far as ship skins go, was going to let the player choose a colour scheme. Create the ships then from that scheme. So no skins as such, each player has a matching colour scheme fleet.

Perhaps something like an empire logo, upload an image and it appears on the side of your ships. Something to look into anyway

Planets... well you'll get to create your homeplanet from scratch - thats the very first thing I did for the game You choose the entire colour scheme, rotation speed, number of rings... etc...etc..

There's a limit to what I can do - I'm not going for intensely accurate 3D graphics here. There's precisely £0 budget for this lol It'll look good for now - upgrades can occur as browser tech improves and time allows (ie the rest of the game is already written). At the end of the day I'm an old school gamer - the visuals mean nothing if the game itself is rubbish. Game first, visuals later.

I like the sound of what you have in store!

Hopefully Opera will be able to render it all correctly

Right now... no

Chrome renders it perfectly in WebGL.

FF used to but its been a while since I tested - takes too long to start up. IE 9 starts up quicker on this office PC and when that happens you just can't justify using FF anymore...

Safari renders in Canvas unless you have V5.1+ and have enabled WebGL in the options.

IE - no support even on the horizon for WebGL. Will be stuck with a large message telling the user to upgrade to a real browser and will render in crappy Canvas in the meantime MS has really made a push to make IE more standards compliant but are going to shoot themselves in the foot if they're the only browser without WebGL support. Its looking like the next big thing with games and it'll just force more users over to Chrome [or FF/Opera]

Opera < 12 - Canvas rendering only.
Opera 12+, WebGL expected to work OK (tested with Opera Next anyway, alpha version so performance isn't there yet).

OK... had been meaning to post something like this for a while. Guess this is a good a kick as any

Done Stuff
Registration: Create your (Unified) account, create/name your planet.

Game interface, turn handling (+1 turn and 'next event', turns accrued), gold handling. Map view and basic interface (right click on planets to view/zoom/bookmark).

Bookmarks manager. Automatically shows your planets, war targets, recently viewed planets and player saved bookmarks.

Big CENSORED research tree viewer. Selection of new research/starting. Research complete reports.

Ship schematic designer. Drag/drop interface to create a ship out of researched modules, weapons, equipment etc. Saves the schematic for your shipyards to build.

Planet Interface. Views general stuff like population, power, defence etc along with various tabs to show planetary buildings (completely done, lets you build what you've researched in a queue with up to 5 buildings queued) and the very beginnings of actual ship construction, taking the schematics and building them. This is where I currently am.

To Do
Last steps of registration where you select race specific traits like current PC does and name your starting ships / select their captains.

Saved bookmarks are not yet saved on the server, a refresh wipes them out.

Finish ship building.
Select your ship captains when each ship is built.

Planet interface: Troop building and orbiting craft list.

Ship movement including scouting planets.
Spy missions
Ship combat including all of its repercussions (ie loosing planets, ships damaged/lost etc).
Diplomacy (ie see who you're at war with/allied with etc)
Player to player communication, including alliance chat etc.

End turn report is currently very basic, rework into proper screen that shows events occurring in more detail.

Options page.

I think that sums up when the game will reach its initial state. Its the core parts anyway!
Timeframe... 4-5 months. Best case, probably more like 5-6. This isn't a short project by any means but

I'll be doing ship building next, then ship movement and scouting planets. At that point players will start to be able to interact and I'll let you in to see it Beat

Any chance of some screenshots of the bits you have got done? Is it going to be embedded in the current sites layout, or does the new PC have a new layout completely? (A new Unified, if you will )

Yes... and might not be what you were waiting for

I took a little time off to play some games in the evening, I needed to properly relax rather than spend 24/7 in front of a computer screen My girlfriend makes it hard to code ("you on that thing again?" and "when are you finishing that game?" [3 months ago if you'd left me alone to finish the damn thing... lol]) so I needed to stop the nagging for a bit

Got back to it but I've gone off on a bit of a tangent.

aka - I've done nothing on PC2 in about 4 weeks. Something similar but completely new. Unsure how far it'll go as a project... for now I'm keeping it all under wraps
