Figured its time to take a look at getting a new PC as my one is currently running in the stone age!

Can anyone give me some up-to-date spec/standards?

Looking around I have so far got:

Intel Core i7 960 3.2 GHz Socket 1366 8MB
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3
Nvidia ENGTX480 1536MB GDDR5
Corsair 8GB (2x4GB ) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit
Samsung HD204UI Spinpoint F4 2TB Hard Drive SATA 5400RPM 32MB Cache
OCZ Stealth Xstream 600W PSU
Casecom K5-9388 Black Case with Blue LED 120mm Front Fan
Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
Viewsonic 24" DVI Monitor

Any further suggestions/Alterations.

This comes to £776.79 which is a bit on the pricey side, but I'm willing to pay it after saving for a bit.

Ditch the Hitachi drive and grab a WD Black for ~$100 CAD. (No idea what the conversion to GBP is at the moment)

Grab an Antec case. I'd recommend the DF-35, 600 or 900 II.

I assume you're still sticking with the GTX480?

thanks for the feedback guys.

Been out the loop for too long! Yeah sticking with the GTX 480 as I don't need anything better really. I was told to go for 3 Ram modules for triple channel over 4GB. 6GB better amount?

I'm looking at getting a NAS in the near future for my Music/Downloads/videos/Pictures etc...
Hence the small HDD. Ironically I did spec a Samsung but was told to change it, think I will switch back. Will have a play around on Monday cheers for the recommendations RE: CPU as I'm flying blind about that and someone else suggested switch down to the same as you suggested.

will post up a revised build on Monday but if you have any suggestion for builds fire em across

Notice the HDD is 5400rpm... you'll want a 7200rpm ideally. 5400rpm drives are intended for slow storage purposes and cheap laptops

If you're going to get a separate media center you don't actually want anything with RPM at all. Look at the SSD's out there instead. Once you've used a PC with a SSD you'll never want to go back to a mechanical drive again...

SSD? I'm waiting for the size of the storage to go up and the price to go down. Once that happens. I'm cloning my C drive. The prices have started to come down, I'm just too cheap to pay what they want right now. Even though Newegg.com had a fairly priced one about a month ago.

Cheers for the additional info guys.

the price for the machine has dropped a fair bit, but then went back up because of the SSD!

I haven't ever actually built one from scratch, normally switching out components, so my main concern is thus:

Will I need to buy the additional SATA cables and bits, or will the mobo come with sata cables? I think my old DVD-RW I was thinking of reusing is IDE, so I think I might need a new one of those as well

I'm having issues finding a CPU fan. I believe the processor doesn't come with the fan so I'm trying to find one that will provide suitable cooling. (For a low price)

Anyone have any opinion on Hybrid Drives? I'm not after insane performance, but it would be a nice added bonus!

Ok cheers mate,

Another forum I visit has advised that, I should go for a i5 2500k instead of a 2500, thought they were the same as I checked the specs, but the one I listed above was £10 cheaper! Also advised to avoid the cooler and stick with the stock one, (do they come with the CPU then?) Also, getting mixed views about dropping 4GB of Ram so I sit with 2x2GB.

Ok, this is almost the finalised build:

Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache
Asus P8P67 Pro R3 P67 Socket 1155 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard
G-Skill 8GB (2x4G DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX
Samsung F3 HD103SJ 1TB internal Hard Drive SATAII 32MB Cache 7200RPM
Antec Six Hundred V2 Case
ASUS ENGTX480
Corsair 650W PSU
Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
Thermal Paste
Total: £518.72
With monitor £649.66

Obviously the HDD is possibly changeable for a SolidState OCZ 60Gb, but it costs a chunk more.

Alrighty, the 2500k is an unlocked cpu vs a locked one.

Retail box = with fan, OEM means no fan/cpu only.

Corsair, you cant really go wrong with ANY of their PSU's.

For coolers.... One of the best for air cooling is the Noctua NH-D12, keeps my 2600k at nice temps @ 4.5GHz and 5GHz. There are of course a few other choices, just... stay away from Arctic Cooling's crap. A lot of people bought into their stuff for socket AM2 and 775, despite the poor results compared to similar priced units.

The 8GB of g.Skill is a good choice (g.Skill, Mushkin, and A-DATA are the only 3 I like recommending most)

Even a Corsair 650TX can power my GTX 580, so I think you will be fine with running the 480 Don't pay attention to what a box says, they over-estimate so you don't have issues.

Motherboard is a great choice.

Hard drive/SSD, ok, I'll just break it down a little for you, you won't change out a HDD for a SSD, you will need both, unless you dont plan to install much of anything at all, lol. The Spinpoint F3 is indeed a good hard drive, for reliablity reasons I prefer WD Caviar Black drives, but that F3 has some nicer speeds over the WD drives. What you are going to want, is an SSD to run the OS and primary apps, then a HDD (such as the 1TB you chose) to install all the apps/programs/games to.

For buying an SSD though, look at OCZ's newer stuff, no sense in getting SATA II when SATA III SSD's provide some nicer results

Win7 Home Premium is fine.. But if you are buying outright, just look at Win7 Pro, it has all features of Home Premium + more that you can actually use, Ultimate is useless. If you have an .edu email addy, you can get Win7 directly through Microsoft for $30 via a student program, and yes, it is the full RTM copy from MSDN.

Thermal paste, look at IC Diamond 7, it's much better for use than Arctic Silver 5. AS5 is good, but... IC Diamond 7 requires much less of a cure time (few hours vs AS5's 12-24hr) and has provided better results.

Before I forget, for the monitors that RF has mentioned, honestly, don't worry about all that right now, I tried doing multi-monitor setup for gaming, I refuse to do it again on TN panels... I love my Dell U2410 IPS panel, I'm just not willing to shell out $500 for another one right now, much less a 3rd. TN panels look too washed out IMO to have something like a multi-monitor setup strictly for games.

Cheers guys

The PSU is a spare one I have "acquired" via work on the cheap.

Its a Corsair TX650W PSU, so glad you guys mentioned that its up to the spec!

Ok the CPU im getting is with a fan. So will leave it with stock for the moment as im not going to over-clock it, or if I do it wont be till much later down the line!

Keeping the 8GB of RAM

I'm contemplating buying a standard HDD to tide me over Christmas, and then invest in a SSD and re-format. Other option is to get an SSD and try to tide myself over with that.
Do I need to buy SATA cables, or does the mobo/SSD/HDD come with the cables?
