could it be because they have new server tracker for people who buy RF1 on steam in that pack???? meaning we will all have 2 pay 4 RF again even though we own it on CD |

No it's the same Tracker for both the one on Steam and the Retail copies. |

Mine seems to be working fine with the alternative tracker. Just popped in and seen 57 servers. Didn't do anything special. Didn't enter IP's, didn't quadruple billion click lan and hope for a miracle, didn't rub Frank's special place, or anything of the sort. It just worked. |

Maybe the new PF servers kill the tracker? |

The lesson here is that you should ALWAYS checkmark ALL YOUR FAVORITE SERVERS!
Mine is ...71.87.126.169:7755, we still get a good flow of people at the time when we play.

We used to have IP lists back in the day when the tracker would go down routinely.

It wasn't down
Quoting hA Warlord | The Tracker is not down it's just not listing any servers for some reason |
RF / PF don't use separate trackers. |

Yes the tracker is working again and the suspect that messed up the tracker has been IP banned from the server....... at least for now.
Quoting Allender | The tracker is back up, at least for now. It was never actually _down_. I _think_ that there was some type of exploit happening. It looked like someone was requesting the game lists a _lot_. After those game list requests came in, any game that was registered was shut down. I have a theory that someone is grabbing game lists then perhaps sending some type of packet to each game on the list and causing the game to end, or at least to report that it ended. I know that there was a major buffer overrun problem in the RF code that we never patched. Maybe they are taking advantage of that.
Or maybe I’m wrong J
But I can tell you that the games are now active, and the large number of game requests from this suspect IP have stopped and the game count has stayed high. I need to address this somehow, perhaps through simple IP ban, although that’s not really that effective anymoire. | |

It would be nice to do an IP range block on the RED FACTION server side. |

i agree with sweeper. If the servers were being unregistered by a 3rd party they wouldn't need the server list as often as that IP was pulling it. If someones ISP (like mine) doesnt restrict the outgoing source address on packets they could forge an "Unregister Server" packet coming from the source IP and port of the active servers and it would remove the servers from the tracker. But i have a gut feeling this was more of a Tracker malfunction than an exploit. |
