Dunno why you got an IDE hard drive especially considering you are going to be using as an external. Could grab a SATA II 500GB drive for about $50~

Look at something like that |

omg
why didn't you buy an external USB HD instead?
"brand new IDE harddrive"
Do you have an idea how old IDE drives are? I wouldn't be suprised if the box has dust on it already.
Nobody buys internal IDE drives to use them outside of the PC via USB. That's just...wrong.
You will also need to supply it with a 12V cable. The USB one doesn't do that.
And are you going to use it as a backup drive or do you want to load games from it?
The games will load 3-4x slower via USB.
And WHY don't you just put it inside the PC. What the hell is the reason for not doing this?
Can you return it? |

In a less harsher tone I'd agree, I would get a good 500GB external, or less if you don't need that much. |

He could have asked us here before buying that piece of crap.
Or at least the guy in the shop.
On my 500gig HD, I have (only) 76 games installed, (large games) but it isn't even full.
So yea.. 500 gig is a lot. (I bet he wants to install games on it.)
Can't wait for Windows7 to come, so I can install it on a brand new (now THIS can be called brand new..) Solid State Disk. Actually everyone upgrading to win7 should consider doing this. Just a lil tip for the people that stumble over this thread so you can save money.
IDE - out
SATA - out
SSD - in (ok well, SSD uses the SATA port ...but yeah.. I mean the HD itself ) |

The reason Being is That Yet Another one of my IDE drives.. went out and it has some Data that i need off of it. SO i just need to get the right external closure for it. I myself Run a SATA 200 GB Main drive.. the IDE was just for storage, because at the time i didnt have enough $$$$ to buy another SATA drive.
My God .. Frog you act like the world is gonna come tumblind down because i need it..
I have never even heard of SSD.. i will check it out though. I did have Windows 7 Installed on another PC.. and it was ok... Not super Great.. but good!.. Looked Nice! |

oh ok well.. I dunno how expensive IDEs are at the moment, but I doubt they are THAT cheap compared to external USB ones? IDE just sounds so.....ooold
SSD (solid state drive) is something like the memory in your MP3 player for example. (just better)
Much faster access times (10ms+ vs 0.1ms), and the decent ones also have much better read/write bandwidth. Plus they also require less power, generate little to no heat and produce zero noise.
I have Win7 (a testversion ) on my 300gig drive.. well yea.. it's ok. I don't really see many changes, but most of them are hidden. (?)
I pre ordered it, and when I'll install it, I want to do it right from start on.
Many people say Vista loads half the time on their SSDs. (same with games n stuff) |

Don't look into SSDs right now They are starting to manufacture 32nm NAND, so the prices on those SSDs will be down 60% from the current.
Wait until the end of this year before looking at SSD |

I wouldn't bother with an enclosure, they're expensive. I use a simple IDE to USB adapter, cost me a whopping $10. Works just as well (though, the drive can occasionally get a bit warm to the touch). |

USB adapter
That thing works pretty well. I agree with everyone else though, IDE is so old that they have become way more expensive. a 160Gb IDE costs the same as a 500Gb SATA |

Well, they were almost 50% cheaper before. (early 2009)
I WILL buy a SSD once I get Windows7 in my hands though. Probably Win7 will be the main reason to have them dropping anyway.
Hardware prices always drop, there's no perfect time. ^^
Also, I dunno stuff about 32nm NAND |
