One thing ive noticed is that an unlit area of a level will never be completely pitch black, no matter how much i tweak about with the ambient light settings it seems the only way to have a pitch black corner, or section of a level, is to texture that section with pure black textures.

Is there any other way to achieve a pitch black setting?

indeed, as doc savage said, just make a black fog with0 in far/nearf clip settings and the entire level will be pitch black like in my map

but you cannot do that to a small part of the level.

if you want a reduced enlightment in a part of the level you 'll have to put reduced dark ambiant light (try negative values) and light with small radius and black textures

I'd try to make custom textures that are very dark already!
In this way it's very easy to create exactly the mood you need in your map...

If you want it pitchblack in an area, just use black textures (there is one in the "textures/trim"-folder).

The fog-thing destroys the hole level in a way...
