		 Before you save the map you must calculate the lighting. (lightmaps) 
Otherwise the map will "turn dark" when you geomod. 
 
This is done with the key combination: 
 
Press:  L 
Press: W 
Press: Shift+W 
Press: Shift+L 
 
Do this everytime before you test the map. And of course do not forget to do this before you release it! 
If the map is too dark after doing this, add Lights or raise the ambient brightness in "Edit" ->"Level Properties"

What the keys do: 
L : ambient lights, W : hide objects, Shift+W : Unhide objects, Shift+L : calculate lightmaps 
 
A lightmap is an automatically generated texture which acts like a layer on diffuse textures. It changes the illumination on the diffuse textures. (for shadows and bright light sources)  |
