Hi, What I know is Mac won't play maps that have custom music in them.. Or what are the ways to fix that?

I think I remember Hapa Hanu coming up with a fix for this which requires converting the wav files to aif.

Do you think it would be possible to just make 0 kb aif file and rename It to the same as the map music, That way It's not double the filsize and yet still mac compatible..

Yea, great idea Ninja.
There should be a 0kb aif in the tools download section.

Might be possible to find a wav ->aif converter using google. ^^

tryed it out... didn't work.
When I select aif it reverts it.

Perhaps renaming the file extension..

Even just create a txt file and change it to musicname.aif .... might work

Oh my, odds are that it won't work.

Macs crash when a custom sound file is missing which is tied to a trigger or event.

I would also like to note, .aif files are smaller than their .wav counterparts.

BTW - I refuse to go to work today.

But hapa.. The file wouldn't be missing If you include It in the VPP as a 0 kb file with the appropiate filename?

That's how wav files work.. If you haven't got the wav file you will crash.. But If you have 0 kb file with the appropiate filename It doesn't crash.

Why do you refuse to go work today?
What happened
Not paying you enough?

I dont think you can just change .wav to .aif to make it work.
You'll need a real empty .aif file.
And actually we are talking about more like a 0.25seconds aif soundfile which is around 1KB or something.
Red Faction will play it and after 0.25s it just stops..
I did the same in my clientside mods (weapons). Weapons have idle animations which play sounds, I often muted the sounds.

Well, I tried it out. I replaced some triggered sounds in a map with some renamed files and it didn't crash. I am a tad surprised; I thought for sure the Mac platform would have been more finicky with this sort of thing. It wasn't a thorough test I would like to mention.

But I reckon my point is as follows:

Old mother Hubbard, the mapper, goes to the cupboard to give each her dogs, PC and Mac, a sound bone. When she got there, the cupboard was partially bare - there was only a .wav bone and the poor pup Mac had to be put down like Old Yeller.

For the sake of comparison, DM DAC Dust:
dust.wav = 3.36 MB
dust.aif = 0.89 MB

REDFROG, I refuse to go to work today and tomorrow because I am weary of it. Seven and a half months of overtime is too much. I have crossed the line which separates the machinist from the machine and I must refind my humanity.

Kick back, have a beer, and watch the game, in the nude. That is satisfying, and clarifying of the mind, simultaneously.

Well it also depends how good or bad the mapper chosen the wav format.
It should always be Microsoft ADPCM, not just PCM.
Mono over Stereo reduces it half size. 22kHz is high enough.

So all one would be required to do Is rename a .txt file to .aif with the appropiate filename as I suggested earlier? Or must it be a proper .aif file?

Yeah but If my map has 10MB of wav files.. then It's still going to be another 6 MB or something for Mac proofing..

In my particular case I would rather just have 0kb Mac sounds.. That way at least Mac players can experience the map without music.. Yet all the PC users won't be forced to download an extra 6 MB.. Even though mac RF players are somewhat scarse..

You will find that renaming the file extension will do nothing for you in aspects to sound.
Think about this.
You have a wav file that your computer is able to read from correctly. It reads from the file because of its method of reading from the wav file its self.
Rename the .wav to a .aif and you get an error because your Windows Media Player does not reconsise the extension and will not play it because it will think its currupted sound.
Using software that will convert the file to a .aif is the best option because its changing not just the file extension but how the sound works to play on your computer.

I have a converter called GoldWave. I use it alot to convert sounds or music to and from .mp3 and .wav's Sometimes .ogg. These converters have codecs written into them that writes the correct codec into the file, allowing any application the ability to play the sound because it reconises the codec.

Without this codec, you would not be able to play sounds or music with a specific file extension.

So unfortunally, if you want to listen to the music on the mac, your going to have to edit it like Hapa Hanu does. It waste's abit of your time, but not many people have macs on this website.

I have no intention of playing the aif in windows media player... I just want RF to think aif are present by simply renaming the extension... Or is this not possible? Hapa Hanu?

Doesn't that mean you can rename files and It won't crash?

:: shrugs shoulders ::

IDK - the Mac players in RF won't complain and they don't like to mention that they play on a Mac either.

If a map crashes - they will delete it from their hard drives and never mention it again.

Well it wasnt just WMP I was refering to. All application are affected by this method you mentioned. Even Red Faction. It has the codec inbuilt to read from .wav files.

Example:
Changing a .mp3 file to a .wav without converting it but renaming it will not work because Red Faction cannot read it since its Codec is different and designed to read .wav files. you change a mp3 to wav, by renaming it, it will always have the mp3 codecs.

So it will not work.
