molo, guess were more alike than I thought. No wonder I've bumped heads with you before in the past.

Lol, everyone who is TU'ed wants to talk and the TU system is broken (at least that is what I have come to believe). Guess thats how much Garner cares about what those troublesome users have to say... not a damn bit.

On second thought... nah, its not important enough to waste a few moments shifting brain matter thinking about it. ITCH'es post I mean.

. It will most likely have no mod support,

I'm really curious as to where you're getting this information.

dude? Censored ? I said most likely.

How do you say "most likely not"? They haven't commented on it, except confirming that editing it will be very easy. I'd be willing to bet that would classify as "most likely", not "most likely not"...

3. Why am I wasting time here telling you this.
4. Oh yeah, I was thinking, no matter how many people that vote, the results are still useless beyond personal inquiry.

The votes are useless. Is that the reason why your were "wasting your time telling us that"?

Here's a small hint: this poll was for personal inquiry. Volition most likely doesn't care whether or not we map/mod for RF, and as you've said, they may even take the Tracker down to save bandwidth. What? You thought that I thought a single poll would influence someone at Volition or THQ (most likely they'd need influenced more, as they likely control it all)?

As far as your post: it's sadly spot-on. RF (and L4Y's RF section) is basically dead, evidenced by the 14 or so n00bs I found online about 10 minutes ago and the lack of content you've mentioned. There's people still playing the game, but sadly, the good ones have long gone (if you didn't know that, though, you must be beyond a n00b). Then again, L4Y tends to be a haven of gamers who play old games (we still have a Delta Force section, Operation Flashpoint section, etc); or at least an archive of old mods for games.

What would be really great (hint: trying to influence someone at Volition/THQ) would be if they'd give us special coupons for RF:G for being such die-hard fans of the series (or at least RF1). Then we could all move on as a community (until REDFROG tells us that there will be absolutely no modding, despite the handful of mods created within the first week).

As far as the modding thing goes: we don't know. In all liklihood, Volition probably isn't 100% sure on it (all their information says "maybe") either. It'd be nice if it did, but even if RF:G doesn't allow meshes, it'd still be modded someway. Swapping sound files and images is still "technically" modding something (although many could argue it is a far lesser form), and eventually someone will surely crack the code on xvpp or any other formats they use (my favorite example is the N64 mod community which is still decrypting N64 ROMS and the content within them).

crazyjack1994: what makes you think they'll release the source code to anything? While it'd be nice, and reinvigorate the RF modding community, it's highly unlikely they will. Most companies don't release any IP (Intellectual Property) until they are 110% sure they'll never use it again, and nothing they currently have is based on or uses it. Since RF:G has GeoMod, which some lawyer could argue is based off RF's GeoMod (as it most likely is), it is likely RF's code (if they'd release it) wouldn't be released for years.

EDIT:
Colt Walker: Otter/Duck is an xkcd (link not entirely work or parent safe. Use at your own discretion) reference. On that forum, people post that to mean "other". It all started when someone misspelled "other", then someone asked about a "duck" option. After some flaming and a religious war, it became accepted that instead of posting "other", and risk misspelling it as "otter" (yes, I know, n00bs who don't spell-check need to go back to 4chan), the "other" option would be known as "otter/duck" (with the occasional "/platypus" thrown in).

tl;dr:
* This thread was created as a personal inquiry of the habits of RF modders/mappers.
* Clearly, most of us have abandoned the game, or will abandon it for RF:G.
* Mod support is unknown, probably even to Volition, who've pretty much said "maybe?" every time they're asked (yes, I realize they may just be following the NDA).
* RF:G will be some form of "moddable", as we'll at least be able to swap out the hardcoded external files for our own, and may even crack the file formats of the things we can't directly mod (ie say they don't give us an xvpp editor, eventually someone would crack it and make one for us).
* The source code to RF will not be released for years, as it is likely RF:G is using some RF code. Also, it is likely a lot of Volition's (and maybe even THQ's) projects use some RF code or concepts. Lawyers don't like to let companies release stuff until it's not being used in anything active and never will again.
* Otter/Duck is the greatest option ever, as it plays homage to my favorite webcomic's forum and their insane way of doing things.

I don't get you. Your post has alot of words in it but none of it is consistant. Espically where you started going on about noobs on 4chan and a platapus on some other forums? What? Who cares about some other forum.

It's like your whole post is a pseudo intelligent rant; and it just makes it harder to keep reading it and pay attention to where it is going. Also, where are you getting all these false facts that this section is dead? You are posting in it arent you? Also, why are you.... nevermind...

Anyway, by the time I got halfway done reading your post I wasnt even sure what your motive is, all of this is random. Why cant you even stay on topic in your own topic. lol. Even so, any worthless information obtained on this topic will solve nothing, and wont answer anything either. If you want to look for some real answers ask on the offical Red Faction website.

Dont forget to stay on topic. Here I will help you with some pointers

A) You have to be serious about the approach you take.

Refrain from posting things that you like. Espically things like Nintendo 64 rom communities, ice cream, overweight babes, or w/e.

C) You have to remember not to mention anything about ducks. If a dumb person sees a duck in your thread. game over. You ducked up.

D) Do not explain to people what the abbriveations you use mean. It makes people think you think they are stupid.

E) Do not post inside jokes from other websites.

F) Don't mention any fantasies you have about soruce code and RF.
If anything I think you aren't even sure what you want.

G) Dont give small hints.

H) Don't make assumptions about what direction a company is taking their product unless you have some type of convincing information to back your claims. You know, like proof.

That is nothing.
You can do it with any game. We really don't need to get RF:G for that.

Models, meshes, animations or maybe even other special formats such as 'vbm' can't be just "cracked" that easily.

Also the community will not accept these cracks that much. Neither THQ or Volition will do. (It's kinda illegal)

i doubt Volition is using the Red Faction 1 soruce, but what is strange is that the copyright ran out YEARS AGO meaning any one could (i think) make a (new) Red faction 1 if they want to waste all that time for nothing of course

The GeoMod engine is a registered trademark of THQ, so the point is more or less moot (registered trademarks apparantly never expire). If it is copyrighted (the engine, which is doubtful, as some would consider it an "invention"), it would be copyrighted for 95 years after publication (I'd guess 2001, when RF1 was released? That mean it'd "fall out of copyright" in 2096, if I got this right).

WARNING: PDF.
On the 5th page, second column, about halfway down. "How Long Copyright Protection Endures"

Of course, it may not actually be protected by copyright, as it could be considered an "Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, as distinguished from a description, explanation, or illustration" (ignoring the plural case they used), which would be exempt from copyright. This would be covered under the US Patent Office's patent system.

Now a quick search didn't provide much (aside from MS patented Live? Fail.), mostly because of the arcane language used. Trying to combine a list of what's likely to be in the results ("geometry and modification and game and engine or geomod") didn't help much either (mostly because there's apparantly a company out there called "Geomod" already).

Anyway, patents are made for 20 years after the initial application for a patent (whenever that would be). That means that (as copyright is far longer than patents) the RF1 source (or at least the parts we'd want: the engine, etc) would not be available for at least another 7 years (assuming that they applied for a patent in 1995, when they likely first came up with the idea).

tl;dr:

The US copyright/patent/trademark system holds pretty much everything related to the RF source out of our reach for at least another 7 years.
Copyright doesn't run out for a corporate work (anonymous work, work for hire) for at a minimum of 95 years after publication, or 120 years (whichever is shorter).
My brain hurts from deciphering the various loopholes in the system. Copyright/patent reform will be an issue I'll look for in any candidate I'd vote for this fall.
