Ok My PC would not boot up earlier today it would not read the hard drive.
So I went into the Bios changed initial boot up to CD and it worked great. I then rebooted my PC changed the bios back to initial boot up from the hard drive and it is still working great.
SO ALL IS OK but my question is this. Can the bios be effected by anything other than actually altering the bios at start up. I ask this as I normally have no reason to change my bios and everything seems to be working ok.
Or could this be an early sign of my harddrive is on its way out. |

If you hadn't done anything different prior to your problem, then I'd say [b]digital_ruler[b]'s guys is right on the money. If you did happen to change something just before it happened, then don't do that anymore. |

What is this SMART test I take it it's a diagnostic tool but where can I get it I tried Google but no joy.
EDIT OMG Just went to start RF and found my D drive is not showing up any more. This is my drive with every episode of doctor who all my games installed roms and most importantly all my maps and work in progress. Now I have everything backed up accept my work in progress so as of right now it looks like I have lost my new map |

If you really have to, you can just drop the "missing" hard drive into another computer and get the data off of it. I'm sure it's not your hard drive that's causing the problem. |

Some external influences can change BIOS setings, some applications in windows may change settings, also removable media such as Flash drives can and on some Mobos will change the boot up sequence.
my last compy would all ways change the boot sequence if i left the USB stick in while booting, and it would stay at that setting . So i would have to go to the BIOS to change it back. This is coz alot of BIOS's recognize the USB stick as a bootable device and place it as 1st priority so it will boot from it as soon as u place a USB istick n while booting up. pain in the butt, I know. |

First thing I am gonna try when I get home from work is the obvious check all connections are in firm..............I have kids and some times my PC takes a battering . If that does not work I will try as assman said putting the HD in another PC. Thanks for that info Skvlad that is interesting to know tho I have never booted my PC with any external devices in. Strange your compy did that tho. I looked at rolling back the PC but it says D drive is not there so I am most inclined to think a lead has come lose (I HOPE). |

I have had drives disappear on me before. I found that the power cables were dogie, they were plugged in but if u moved the cables or bumped the compy the drives would shut down and restart and some time they did that just by them selves at random times. |

I have had my compy since end of may (as soon as the M3N HT Deluxe came out) and I have gone through 5 BIOS versions already the latest one came out 3 days ago (v 1003) and it was crap, so i jumped back too v 0901 . Its amazing how much of a difference the bios version makes on the performance of your system. Since the original version to the one I am using now, I gained over 3000 points on 3D Mark 06 |

In the bios, under Intergrated Peripherals, you will have something in there like:
First Boot Device:
Second Boot Device:
Third Boot Device:
Forth Boot Device:
Now it doesnt matter if you have HDD in there or not, because by default, the HDD is booted up anyways, but to always make sure, I have HDD set in there, just to be safe.
I have mine set
First Boot Device: CD-ROM (This allows a CD to be booted if the CD inserted has bootable information)
Second Boot Device: HDD (Just to make sure the computer is actually booting the HDD instead of nothing)
Third Boot Device: Disabled / None
Other than that, You can always open up your computer case and check the cables leading to your hard drive.
Pay special attention to SATA-II cables because the old type of those cables fall out easily. The new type of those cables have clips on them, stopping them from falling out of the harddrive or Motherboard.
Check your power cables too. Make sure they are connected properly into the hard drive.
For IDE, check the pins on the motherboard. I use to have a problem with IDE cables, that everytime i go to plug them in, I always somehow managed to bend the pins out of place and would have to straighten them back out again, because im stupid .
Also check and make sure your hard drive is connected properly aswell.
There are loads of tests you can run to determain problems. You just have to have the patients and take your time really. |

The USB ports going out on the back of your PC is a bad sign. They're likely directly connected to your motherboard and that can either indicate physical damage or even worse, a dying motherboard. I'd keep my eyes open for similar problems if I were you, just to be safe. |
