Don't uninstall steam without backing up the game/mod/screenshot files.
i've uninstalled steam yesterday, just to switch the hard drive it was saved on.
After I was done with uninstalling it...I had to see that everything of the Steam folder was erased, even !!screenshots and mods!!!
This is just an information, so it wont be happening to you
Valve is pretty stupid, they are wasting their own bandwidth. I have to download everything again.
At least the setup could have ASKED me b4 it erased everything. |

What did you expect? For all of the game files to remain on your PC with no security? Removing all files is an anti-piracy measure, and a good one at that. |

IF they did delete all my custom maps, I would be pretty pissed, most games / software tend to leave user created files alone, and only delete the files related to the said product. |

I was highly expecting that when I was going to uninstall Steam.
I had mods like Natural Selection. And there is absolutely no point for steam to delete this mod, I have downloaded for free, which is custom content and doesn't even have relation with steam.
Any other game that I know of usually leaves such files
It will just do it if you were going to uninstall steam. Be aware

Security? What do you mean by that? Security for whom? My PC? Valve?
You can always save (feature of steam) the downloaded games in steam. So its not necessary to download them again and again.
Plus I doubt they will work when you transfer those files onto another PC with a different account.
That CENSORED uninstaller erased gigabytes of data. And it didn't leave me any security
Oh well.. |

I used to hate Steam back when it was first released, but its made huge improvements over the last few years. I think its one of the best game delivery services on the market right now. |

Steam is ok. Only the long login and memory usages bugs me.
The pricing of the games on steam is not ok.
They are still selling CoD4 for 70$ on Steam, Portal2 for whole 20$ (it a very poor <2 hours game), while UT3 and Crysis dropped their prices months ago.
70$ is A LOT of money, for a game that I have to download, I get no DVD/DVD-case neither manual for.
However CoD4 is ranging on place4 on the bestsellers, because most people buying games there must be somewhat retarded and dally.
For European (or more specifically german) market, games offering sucks.
Thanks for bringing up an old topic. lol |

The whole idea of Steam is to bring legal digital distribution to the masses... if Steam wasn't there (and no other substitute available such as Impluse) piracy would probably be much higher...
People want to be able to download something quickly, cheaply and preferably legally. If there is no legal option they'll take the illegal option, its simple. Steam might not be 100% non hackable but it has probably done more for the games industry than any retarded "anti copy" measures that have plagued standard CD distribution before it simply by making it easy to get legal games online.
It also helps that games on Steam are around 50%-75% the price they are in the stores here in the UK and most of the time download faster than it would take me to drive into town, buy the game and get back. Not to mention I can do it from the comfort of my sofa... |

In regards to REDFROG's opinion on Steam prices: Valve operates Steam. Every one of Valve's games on Steam are VERY cheap and among the best games out there. They're a steal for their prices. As far as I know, no Valve product has ever been above $30. Other developers charge their own amounts for their games and Valve isn't involved.
Take for example CoD4: Valve just distributes it. You can run the game without Steam. |

Sorry goober but most of Valves games are either old, or cheap productions, addons, quick n easy productions such as Portal, games with outdated graphics, or just remakes (CSS)
Half Life 2 was full price when it came out. Of course it was, but all additional source software was not that expensive in the developement, so why even bother make it expensive when it isn't, and fake the customers?
And don't worry. Valve is making enough money with it. It's not like they are killing their prices for the better selling because of the competition...which is not there when games like Portal are the winners and multi million $ games like Crysis, UT3 are the losers. LOL |
