Welcome!
Post 1 / 1

I got a new dell computer. I was running red faction on my old computer just fine. But I noticed the new computer really runs it “choppy” Seams more apparent on close-up battles. A second or two delay.

Is there a setting I am missing at start-up or on properties? Inside the game I put everything really low, but no help.

Please help I want to get back to playing at work.

XP, SP2
Intel Core 2 CPU
2.16 GHZ, 2.00GB OF RAM
Quadro FX 350M Graphics

The dual core fix will most likely solve your problem. Are you running XP or Vista?

Today I planned to buy another 2 Gigs.
Then I remembered 4Gigs aren't possible on XP.
So I thought about getting Vista, because I'm also getting a new HD.
Now I found out not even Vista (32bit) supports 4GBs
CENSORED ?

If I was going with 64bit I'd have to be afraid in driver issues and unworkable games such as RF...or UT04... ? I'd have to wait for the 64bit era if I wanted to upgrade ram, at that date a new windows will be available anyway.
So I bet you'll barely find games which require 4GB in near future.
But ram is so cheap I just want to buy it

Vista (32bit) supports up to 3GB. Also XP can do that but only by doing a trick, and I'm not sure if it really works.
sorry didn't want to start a new thread LOL
It's also good to know for everybody

Ghostkid, I did yes, but I couldn't be sure if he was refering to his old PC or his new Dell one.

Should have done some research lol. Only the 64-bit will allow the 4GB of RAM to run as dual channel, 32 bit will force it to run in single channel I believe.

I PLANNED to buy it. But I didn't
And it's not only a matter of dual channel or not. (I wouldn't care)
It's a matter of size limitation on 32bit systems. There is just no more than 3GB possible on 32bit.
There is a logical calculation behind this fact.
With 64bit the possible size increases like 1000 times higher. (well I dunno...but it can be MUCH greater. Vista Ultimate 64bit: 128GB+ )

I tried to find some websites which list PC games and the OS compatibilities. Most of them (vista64bit lists) are too small, and none list UT2004 neither UT3. And don't even think to find games games like RF in such "mainstream-gamers" lists.

oh I just read that for Vista 32bit users it is possible to upgrade to 64bit at a price of maybe around 15$ (11,85€ here)
Not bad

XP and Vista 32-bit both support up to 4GB of RAM. I think your sources may be wrong.

The 64bit version of XP can hold and use 4Gb.
32bit does tolerate 4GB, but not use or show up, because of the 32bit architecture. Anything over 3GB would create "pageflips".
Same with Vista 32. It does run with 4GB but not use it.

I somehow cannot find a microsoft source with this data, so those user comments have to do it.
May it because they dont want to list negative aspects or ... I just cannot find it on their undetailed (=>user friendly) sites.

The full 4GB is recognized and used; not very well, but it's still used.

Operating systems based on Microsoft Windows NT technologies have always provided applications with a flat 32-bit virtual address space that describes 4 gigabytes (G of virtual memory. The address space is usually split so that 2 GB of address space is directly accessible to the application and the other 2 GB is only accessible to the Windows executive software.

The 32-bit versions of the Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows NT Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition, operating systems were the first versions of Windows to provide applications with a 3-GB flat virtual address space, with the kernel and executive components using only 1 GB. In response to customer requests, Microsoft has expanded the availability of this support to the 32-bit version of Windows XP Professional and all 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2003.

Windows 2000 Memory Support. With Windows 2000 Professional and Server, the maximum amount of memory that can be supported is 4 GB (identical to Windows NT 4.0, as described later in this section). However, Windows 2000 Advanced Server supports 8 GB of physical RAM and Windows 2000 Datacenter Server supports 32 GB of physical RAM using the PAE feature of the IA-32 processor family, beginning with Intel Pentium Pro and later.

Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 Memory Support. The maximum amount of memory that can be supported on Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 is also 4 GB. However, Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition supports 32 GB of physical RAM and Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition supports 64 GB of physical RAM using the PAE feature.

So yea.
Even 3GB (2GB + the extra 1G is not worth it.

I run WindowsXP Professional 32-bit SP2 and it recognizes 3.5GB of the 4GB. Meh. If you were to go 64-bit, just make sure you grab Vista and not XP. XP 64-bit was more or less a "stepping stone", whereas Vista is more of a stabilized testing phase.

And about his problem, he is running a graphics card instead of a video card, that could possibly be the issue. Graphics cards aren't meant for games... I'd like to know if he's tried any other games with the computer and workstation graphics.
