Can we discuss lazyban, as I'm sure that modifies the code and negates the need for a CD?
I wasn't discussing software piracy either, just software carelessness. |

It could be interesting to get THQ/Volition's view on both Lazyban and Pure Faction, compared to their EULA for the game. |
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. |

yup, both are pretty much forbidden. I don't see many other games (if any) for which the community made new modified .exe files to change the code of the game. But well, some stuff has proven some great archievement to the RF community, LazyBan has been helping out the servers really a lot of times.
I guess if it was used for cheating and advantages to the stock players, we would see this in another view.
But as Hapa Hanu said, it should not be discussed and leave it as it is, LazyBan is at least 3 years old. |

The bizarre thing is, during the L4Y vs Volition game, during corespondence, they asked what version we would be playing...
1.2 or the community made 1.3 |
Trying to find old players. Anyone about? Drop me a PM or reply to this thread:

OK...
No-CD 'patches/cracks/whatever you want to call them' are illegal. End of story.
It doesn't matter if you legally own the game or not, No-CD's bypass the copy protection which violates the EULA/various software laws around the world.
Now they're damn handy to use yes as I hate finding my CD's when the game runs perfectly well without it (cough use Steam ) but just because something is usefull doesn't negate the fact its at the very least extremely questionable in the eyes of the law/license agreements.
Technically anything the community puts out that bypasses such protection is illegal. If Lazyban/Pure (no idea on either as never used either myself but both are mentioned above) offer No-CD capabilities then they are also illegal. There is nothing you can say to change this.
Now whether or not the games company cares depends on 2 aspects.
1)
How new the game is. If its their flagship baby they've just released... well they'll do everything in their power to stop your no-cd from working. Legal threats if they know who you are through to changing the way the exe/copy protection works in the next patch. They might also let the no-cd cracks work but silently make a note of it and ban your CD key from playing online. Perfectly legal under the license agreements you agree to when installing the game.
2)
If you're making any money off it. No-cd's are almost always freely available but there have been stories of people being sued for stuff like this for making money from adverts on their website that hosts it. One of those strange but true times...
Red Faction is old enough that I seriously doubt THQ would really be that bothered about it. I would also seriously doubt that [V] would not be aware of lazy ban etc in the community after 3 years of being in existance.
If either company were bothered about the existance of Lazy Ban they would have said something to someone by now.
Flat out No-CD's however will never be hosted here as they're too close to the edge of the law. At least Lazy Ban is a genuinely useful tool that adds to the game. |

I think Garner explained it perfectly. This is why this thread is being closed. I also wanted to have the last word in this thread. Read above and you will know who I mean by I. |
