I apoligise first off for this being similar to the ATI Radeon topic I created the other day however If im going to upgrade my GFX card and my RAM, im wondering if it might be worthwhile just getting a whole new rig.

I dont think it is but, we shall see.

My Current Setup

Intel P4 2.8Ghz (Hyper-Threading)
512MB RAM
ATI RADEON 9600
320GB + 120GB HDDs (IDE)
DVD-RW
CD-RW
Floppy Drive (Full of Dust )

I only REALLY want to upgrade the RAM and now the GFX, I think the Processor is still fine and dandy?

My Mobo can only support Single core Processors to my knowledge, and also I dont THINK I have an PCI-Express slots, I use AGP for my GFX card.

>>This<< card looks good, but is still a bit on the pricy side of things for me. I know nothing about GFX cards now, I used to know a bit about the models and such back when I brought my machine but have not the foggiest now.

AGP graphics cards are generally more expensive than their PCI-E counterpart for some reason. As far as you other specs, RAM really doesn't need to be above 1GB (more helps, but it's unnecessary) with Windows XP. The Pentium 4 line hasn't aged well, IMO; there are a number of replacement options you can do for cheap, but most all would require a new motherboard. Disk drives could use upgrading, but wouldn't really effect your performance in-game by a noticeable amount.

Overall, I'd say keep your rig as-is (except maybe a minor RAM upgrade) until you can afford to overhaul everything. You're better off going PCI-E as AGP is only getting more rare and more expensive (and soon PCI-E2 will be the standard).

I think a new graphic card could be an alternative untill you can get a complete new comp:

PowerColour has this one:

PowerColor Radeon HD 3850 "PCS" 512MB, GDDR3, AGP8X, 2xDVI/HDMI/HDCP

A couple of others:

HIS Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB GDDR3, IceQ, AGP8X, 2xDVI/HDCP/HDMI, "Turbo"

HIS Radeon HD 2600 XT 512MB GDDR3, IceQ, AGP8X, 2xDVI/HDCP/HDMI, "Turbo"

Not sure where/if you can get it in UK, though.

I think that card might do the job till you can build a new comp, since it has "Comprehensive DirectX® 10 support"

Ok. Im leaning towards a RAM and GFX card update.

>>This<< RAM
Kingston 1GB DDR PC2700 333MHz Non-ecc CL2.5 Memory Module
£34.04

>>This<< GFX Card
HIS HD 2600XT IceQ Turbo Full HD 1080p HDMI Dual DL-DVI & TV HDCP 256MB 128bit GDDR3 AGP Graphics Card
£80.54
--------------------
TOTAL: £114.58

Hmmm, sounds alot just for these 2. mind you, the Processor and Mobo nowadays I was looking at are around £100-£200. Sounds a fair package.
Still not sure though. See how much money i get for my 21st tomorrow.

I'd just look into a full system build.... Grabbing an AGP IMO is worthless right now. If you want a nice cheap route, you won't go wrong with an AMD Athlon64 X2 system as most of the X2 procs are priced very nicely for those on budgets(And for the fact that even nearly ANY AMD Athlon will dominate a P4 anyway).

Hmm any PC with an AGP mainboard is pretty much in a dead end.

You should not waste your money on that.
You better wait to save more money and then buy a new cheap PC or put some cheap hardware together.

AGPs speed is 8x pci
PCI express is 16x

Also with a new cheap athlon cpu you can use DDR2 ram. (often old RAM is more expensive than the newer ones)

The 2600XT AGP version also isn't that good, my old AGP HIS RX1650Pro IceQ is in the same range, didn't handle UT3, barely played Crysis (on low detail it was ok).
I doubt Cod4, Timeshift or Bioshock would look any good.

I got the same but with Ram aswell for $600 AU, has been able to play any game I've thrown at it, yet to try crysis though. from memory £1 = ~ $2 AU so yea it's a decent deal.
P.S. Still Alive.

Hey I am still on a AGP PC.
It's not dead. I can still play UT3, UT2004 and Red Faction!
I do agree, my next PC will have a PCI Express motherboard.
That won't be for a couple of months. Right now there is no need to upgrade since the games I play are still very much playable.
