DirectX® 10
Quote | One of the most exciting developments in Windows Vista is the groundbreaking graphics technology. Many of the newest Windows games take full advantage of the next-generation graphics technology in Windows Vista called DirectX® 10. DirectX® 10 provides an incredibly detailed experience for gamers of every type, and enables game creators to increase a game's level of realism, enhancing details and complexity in gaming worlds, apply effects like dynamic lighting and weather, and much more.
While Windows Vista is fully compatible with games and hardware that use older versions of DirectX®, the new DirectX® 10 features are available with a DirectX® 10 compatible graphics card and games designed to take advantage of this new technology. Adding a DirectX® 10 card to a PC running Windows Vista is like turbocharging your gaming experience. Existing games (most of which were written using DirectX® 9) get world class performance, while unlocking the new generation of gaming graphics with DirectX® 10 optimized games. | |

No direct x 10 is for Vista only and not for XP.
Sure only newer cards support the latest features direct x 10 has..... |

If you have WindowsXp, I don't even think it will allow you do install it. I just got UT3 and I believe that it does have DirectX 10 in the DVD. When I installed it, it never prompted me to to install it. I check to see what version I had and I still have Directx 9c.
To check what version you have:
1. Click the Start button
2. Click Run
3. In the text box, type in dxdiag
You will then see a window pop up that looks like this, after it's done checking whatever it's checking.

A hobby programmer made Dx10 and all of it's including effects to work for XP. (it's all software based...you can do anything for XP..even make it look like Vista)
Games that run on Vista can also run on XP if their effects aren't basing too much or at all on dx10. (Halo2)
Crysis even limits so called "Dx10 only effects" on XP which can be archieved on Dx9. INI file changes allow you to use them.
I bet the programmer got bribed by MS.
MS is trying to make you downgrade to Vista at any cost. |

I too see that as a reason why it's not available for XP or older versions of Microsoft.
I don't plan on switching to Vista any time soon.
Maybe after I give up completely on Red Faction, I'll do it.
The only thing that worries me about newer operation system software is that we will end up not being able to play much older games (like Red Faction, SoF or UT). That alone is why I haven't switched. |

True, but we also have seen that even new hardware creates trouble with older games.
4GB of RAM is not possible with RF. Perhaps it's going crazy with 4Ghz CPU? We don't know yet.
Programmers haven't thought about all possibilities in the past, or didn't care at that time.
Just like the old BIOS software which wasn't year 2k compatible
UT for example goes completely crazy on my machine, when thers a fps boost the gamespeed will also increase, unplayable.
There are a lot of compatibility issues with Vista and old drivers/games/tools. |
