I do the finishing touches of my map, save it, hdd is busy for a while, up pops an
exception error from windows, red crashes to desktop.

Try to load in level, red says 'invalid level file

map, didn't save is 0 byes

But I had the autosave on, so loaded in the backup.
Then tried to overwrite the file with the good
copy, but during the save Red just crashed again.

Why does the Red Editor sometimes fail to save maps properly?
Red limits breached?, Yep, (20,000 fces and its still going !)

Why? Because it was poorly made. The only reason RED exists was because the editors needed an easy tool to use. From a gamer's standpoint it's really a poorly thought-out and buggy tool that is just horrible to use. But it was made for the developers, not us. Try RED-FROG's RED Optimized, it really cuts down on errors.

I'm sure the developers struggled a little with Red the way it is. But Violition should've made the editor alot more robust and user-friendly to the public before shipping it off
with the game.

Running Red-Optimized has stopped the error. It now saves successfully.

I got bored with just playing the original limited single player maps that came shipped
with it, so I added in my custom levels to make more maps and places to go in
the game....

They should have, yes; but it wasn't their call, it was THQ's. Hopefully THQ won't rush the next Red Faction too.

An alternative method:

Presuming you mean when you are aaving to a .VPP (Exporting) and not just saving the .RFL, you can save the .RFL then use CCrunch (available here) to create the vpp with the level, or use VPP Builder, also available here.
Trying to find old players. Anyone about? Drop me a PM or reply to this thread:
