There has been some mild interest in the process of converting custom sounds from the PC to the Mac version of Red Faction. It was a long journey. I did things the wrong way for a long time but if I hadn't I wouldn't have figured it out. Thank goodness for VPP Builder.
One thing to be aware of, not everyone has a PC and a Mac. Luckily the people who have a PC know of someone with a Mac and Mac users likewise know PC users. To do the conversions involves a lot of file transfers, a lot of testing and a lot of patience.
The Mac version of Red Faction uses sound files in the AIFF IMA 4:1 format. It is also known as AIFC. I have found that the sample rates of 11025 and 22050 are critical - stick with these two if you can.
There is a lot of experimentation involved in testing the custom sound on a Mac. If you cannot hear the custom sound or other game sounds are muted - it isn't working. Go back and adjust, one at a time per test, the following:
• Sample rate - 11025 or 22050
• Bit - 8 or 16
• Channels - Mono or Stereo
I haven't identified a finer pattern of conversion behaviour. Don't be surprised if you come across a custom sound that refuses to work no matter what the sample rate, bit rate or channels are. There are some I cannot get to work at all either. When I finally solve it - I may be an old man by then.
Two free programs on the Mac platform which can convert to AIFF IMA 4:1 or AIFC:
SoundAppPPC for Mac OS 9
Max for Mac OS 10.4
I am unaware of any free PC conversion utilities which deal with AIFF IMA 4:1 or AIFC. |

Yep, that would probably work. However, the free trial version of River Past is limited to 2 minute conversions. |

A novel idea, but unnecessary. Besides, I would like to see you work on and finish the myriad of projects you have going on first before taking on new challenges. I work on converting sound files one map at a time. I admit, for a while I haven't done any conversions. However, this past weekend I have been picking up steam and doing up some more. |

Quoting REDFROG | Does the lego mod work for Macs yet, or is the idea dropped? |
I can say yes and no. The first stumbling block is that most Mac users cannot open an .exe. I have a PC, so I opened the .exe and installed the mod. Then I extracted the .wav files, converted them into .aif, made a new .vpp with just the .aif files in it and called it MacLegoSounds. Transfered the mod folder to the Mac and started it up. The cutscenes, intro movies, ran just fine - good news.
Then I started up the first map and discovered that it was all dark. Like super foggy dark. So I PM'd REDFROG, asking him if I could tweak the first map so it would work on Macs. He said "pfffft". So then I reduced the Near Clip Plane and Far Clip Plane to 0.00/0.00 and then it worked on my Mac. Good news too.
The version of the LEGO MOD which I have is fully functional on the Mac, except for one thing. After killing the LEGO Darth Vader the player goes down the elevator and picks up the Rocket Launcher - CRASH. I spent some time trying to figure out why, still think about it from time to time. I suppose I could edit the map and remove the custom Rocket Launcher, but I rather not. |

I don't think it is the animated reticle. Using the single player cheat command to obtain all weapons, I used the custom rocket launcher without any problems. No worries. I will figure it out at some point.
Other mods I have worked on for the Mac, each having some degree of unresolved bugs.

For other file types, I have hundreds of fully functional Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Player Weapons. The majority are uploaded to FileFront at this time. If you are on a Mac and are interested in the custom features of Red Faction - drop me a PM and I can help you out. |
