I have an HP dv8000, with Vista. But I do not recommend vista, just depends if you like the graphics. Mine is less than a year old. 160 GB HD, 1 GB RAM, 2.53 GHz Processor. Nvidia 7600 Video Card. It's overall a great laptop. My only issue is I don't have a big enough HD.

I completely agree. Just find the hardware you're looking for at the price your willing to pay. |

Well, I've noticed that cable/DSL companies seem to all like using HP notebooks for their employees/technicians.
I'd tend to say Dell or HP will be your best for price/performance. |

I have a 3-4 year old Toshiba laptop and haven't had any problems so Toshiba seams to be a good comapny too. |

From my experience I've come to the conclusion that Alienware looks great, but is'nt all its "cracked up to be" when it comes to useability... |

Alienware charges slighting more for the hardware, then they add on a $1000 charge for you to use the brand name. Stick with a cheaper company, like Sobe said, Dell or HP. Other than that it's pretty much whatever specs you like. What are you planning to use it for? Knowing that could help us be a bit more specific (don't say 'gaming' because I'll just laugh). |

you can laugh now, Assman
IMO Laptops are nothing to play with.
Why would you buy a laptop, lay it on the table play with it and not move it away from there, it's a waste of money and really stupid.
You could have twice as much performance for the same money. |

Twice, you say? I say no; if you're good at finding deals you can get more than twice the performance! If you're looking for something you can easily take to a friend's house might I recommend building (or having built for you) a micro PC. they're basically standard PC's that are built to fit very small cases. If you buy a video card with an SVideo-Out jact all you'd need to bring with you would be a mouse, keyboard and headphones (assuming your friend has a TV). |

Alienware is definitely overpriced for their crap support. Product wise... Alienware is decent, but I highly recommend either Falcon-NorthWest or VoodooPC. Falcon NorthWest, also known as Silverstone, is an excellent and respected company of fine enthusiast products.
http://www.falcon-nw.com
If you go AlienWare, you are honestly kinda asking for something to go wrong. Falcon-NW will assist you in customer support, from what I found, til basically the world's end to find the problem. And their parts are probably the best you'll find in use. Still pricey though if you go Falcon-NW. But you get better "bang for your buck" if you go Falcon NorthWest.
Anyway, as per what you are looking for, I'd just go to a local CompUSA, BestBuy, etc. and see if they have any on display that meet the specs you are looking for at a reasonable price. |

Well, I got a HP Pavilion 9014ea Laptop and I have been very happy to it.
I don't know if can be gotten with Win XP pro, but I got mine with MCE, which had to make way for XP pro.
About overtall, machine heats somewhat much, so needs cooling.
And one criteria in selecting mine was that it has to be good enought to run newest games decently and portable, so I ended into laptop... |

Laptops can play newish games fairly decently... nowhere near as well as a desktop PC but if you're looking for portability with a side order of games on the move... well they do their job perfectly. |
