Well, I found uPaint on one of the UT2004 CDs, and I thought I'd have a whirl at making a player skin.

Unfortunately, everytime I try to export my new player model to UT2004, it complains that it cannot connect to UT2004 when it gets up to creating the texture file.

Can anyone help?

have you DLed the patch? ...

uPaint i have found to be kinda lame though ...

you pretty much have to make the texture, then export it, package it in UeD (or directly link it ... haven't tried), then make a custom character line that uses the texture ...

or at least that how i think its supposed to work ...

its a bunch of work my way ...

have you DLed the patch? ...

I hadn't done that, doing that fixed the problem. Still, uPaint wasn't making the .utx file. I made it manually by cloning an existing file and replacing the contents with the stuff I had created.

I have another problem, though. I've managed to get Alyx working, but now I need a portrait for him.

Ok, umm if you do that it will completely mess up your origional character ...

if you create a completely new texture package and place the head, body and portrait textures in there, you can make a completely custom character ...

you can change different properties of the character by making a .upl file for that character containing the references (body model, texture, voicepack, etc)

this is a clip of some examples taken from xplayersL1.upl that show the references of stock characters:

Edit: I removed the code because it streached out the page ... i thought the code tag had a scroll bar that went side to side at one time ... anywho, just open xplayersL1.upl in notepad and you will see

as you can see this file contains all the things you need to edit the characters traits, textures, info, etc.

you just need to make your own texture package and create a .upl for your character that refers to that package ... if you change the stock package you will permanently change a character, and it also may cause problems in servers that scan for cheats

do you get what im saying? ... if not i will walk you through step by step ...

Yeah, I'm sorted now. Thanks Assaultman67.

Oh, and here's the skin you've helped me create:
