Hello boys and girls.
Lately I've been reminiscing about the good old days of CTF and how much fun it used to be. These days there are very few CTF servers and most of those are empty when I'm online. I have therefore been pondering how to put a bit more life back into them.
My solution..... well I didn't come up with one lol. However, I thought it might be interesting to run a CTF competiton/tournament of sorts with a cash prize to stimulate some interest. I'd be willing to put up $100 for transfer to a paypal account... that's Aussie dollars lol.
I am only thinking about this at the moment but I'd like to get an idea of how many people might consider entering IF it did go ahead. I'd also need someone to host it on their server since I only have dialup. I'd be present for each game to record frags etc. That makes it a little tricky as far as when the games would be run but I suppose I could drink a lot of coffee and give myself electric shocks to keep going.
Individuals would score according to frags and caps, however, the caps would be awarded to the whole team. In other words, no matter who caps the flag, the team would all score an extra 10 points on top of their personal frags. That means players have to be more team oriented. They will have to look after their team mates who are carrying the flag rather than just playing for themselves.
The games would be played in RF 1.3 in a password protected server. I'd be there purely as a spectator ... or maybe some other trustworthy person could do it when i'm not available.
No I am not asking for volunteers.
Players can organise their own teams of 6 and they have to stick with that team throughout.
If a particular player simply cannot make it to a game then someone else can be substituted, but any points they might receive are awarded to the original player. Plus they'd need to have a good reason e.g. "I caught the Ebola virus and the spurting blood from my eye sockets made it hard to see the screen."
Anyway, that's the basics. I may add more or change it totally.
Anyone interested? |

Thanks Infernus. If there are a lot of aussie players, I may take you up on that.
As to team size, that will also depend on how many people want to play. |

CTF rail servers are still the most popular and populated. I generally find people playing in rail europe or Zyl Succes |

Oh my. This would be a tricky affair, but, if Kiliad wants to be the master of this tournament - go for it.

Yeah, rail servers do pretty well. I remember not too long ago I was in a CTF server and I saw you molodiets, when I said hello you didn't even respond. You broke my heart. |
I have suffered in real life for the past couple years, now its your turn! |

Quoting adam_morland1 | i'd like that - i mite not b able 2 play, but i'll try - im from NZ btw, so u'll need to get the right time for me when it starts, lol looks like i need to get my skillz up and start fragging alot more often
edit: oh no! 1.3? couldnt u make it 1.2 so people dont have to download stuff??? |
RF 1.3 isn't a huge download compared to some maps.
The purpose of using it is to avoid any cheating issues. Not that anyone who frequents L4Y would ever consider doing such a distasteful thing. It is merely a precaution. |

Well, responses are a little slow so far but at least they're positive.
I have been thinking about making a map specially for the tournament.... if indeed it goes ahead. It's certainly a great way to get people to download a map LOL... hmmm... I will have to ponder the moral implications of that
Anyway, spread the word. I'd like to get a least enough "yes" responses to constitute 2 teams of players. 4 teams would be better. |

checkmate........
grumble grumble grumble
I really dont see all the appeal in that map
its way to small to pull of some serious tactics , its mostly about how many guys can your teammates lay waste to and often results in complete on sided domination |

And Bingo was his name-o!
Tactics!!!!
CTF is supposed to be played differently to DM. Its got a T in it and DM doesn't..... ok it also has a C and an F too, but the T is really important. TEAM also has a T in it. See the connection? Its obvious!!!!!
With a team you can plan ahead and have others lay down support fire or distract the enemy by acting as cannon fodder.
Hmmm... I wonder what a death run style map would be like as a CTF.
Anyway... the maps I'm thinking about are reasonably large so that its not just random chance that decides who wins. It will require SKILL. Its a shame skill doesn't have a T in it as well because it would have really rounded off my rant nicely.... hmmmm SKILT? |

little do you know kiliad
skills origin comes from skillet
yes skillet, you heard me right
because back in medieval times, those who actually cooked something that tasted good were praised as the most skilled people of their time (more respected than knights) ( the people were getting tired of gruel )
eventually the word skill became slang for a cook
and the peasants would say "man, that blacksmith was a skill", obviously comparing him to a chef
and eventually the word skill spun off from skillet to make a new word
or perhaps not
i have an overactive imagination |

how are the points counted in CTF.
In UT2004 you have additional points when you capture a flag or when you kill a flagbearer or when you get the flag back.
But i think in RF, you just have the number of frags you got. In the final classement board, the first is the one with the max number of frag and if two players have even scores, the first of them is the one who capture the most flags.
I'm not sure i understood kiliad's idea. The teams must be the same from the begining to the end? No way to change a member? A team must have a leader who decides who's in?
The score of the team is equal to the cumulated amout of frags of its members plus 10 points for each capture? Why is it needed to count the frag? The winning team is the one who capture the max flags (or not). Is it possible for a team to win whereas they got less capture but many more frags?
There is no individual classement? Can't you have like in UT an individual classement? Players would be credited with one point for each frag and 10 points for each flag they captured.
No reward for killing a flagbearer? |
