Wanna learn how to make this?
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/0911_screen001.jpg

Well its easy...kinda if you follow these steps:

1. Open up RED and make a room 20x20x20 or big enough to hold the spiral stairs you will be making.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x1.jpg

2. Now take the cookie cutter and give it the dimensions .25x4x10 and with 10 splits in depth.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x2.jpg

3. Make that brush a solid, build it, then rotate it downwards or upwards 2 times with your mouse cursor in the front view box.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x3.jpg

4. Now make your grid size to .25(if you haven't already) and go to vertex mode.

5. Select the very top vertices of the brush and move them upwards 2 times
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x4.jpg

6. Then with your mouse try to get the lines as straight as you can.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x5.jpg

7. Now select the next 2 vertices and move them up 3 then over 3 and try to get the line as straight as you can without moving it out of position.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x6.jpg

8. Select the next couple of vertices, move it up then straighten the line.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x7.jpg

9. Now select the next couple of vertices. move it up 3 then over 3 and straighten the lines. Now you have yourself a couple of steps.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x8.jpg

10. For the rest of the vertices repeat the same process.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x10.jpg

11. Now size the width of the brush down to .25, then copy and paste the brush and move it over to the right.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x11.jpg

12. Now to create the steps, make a brush about .25x4.5x1.75 and place it on the steps like so:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x12.jpg

13. Create a Solid Brush about .01x4.5x10 and give it 10 splits in depth, rotate it then place it over the stairs, and if you want you can even vertex it on the stairs so it fits more properly, then go into texture mode and give it the cem_invisible03.tga texture under effects.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x13.jpg

14. Create another brush, 1.5x.25x.25 and place it along the side of the step near the edge, then copy and paste it on all the steps just like this:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x14.jpg

15. Now to create the railing, make...yet another brush, .25x.5x10 with 10 splits in depth, rotate it, then place it ontop of the brushes that you copied and pasted earlier and if it isn't on all the way then you can always resize it, or vertex it so it fits.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x15.jpg

16. Select all the brushes, select stretch then resize the height down to about 6, or whatever height you want that looks good to you.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x16.jpg

17. Now give the brushes whatever texture you want.

18. Now for the final step, Select all the brushes and bend it at a 90 degree angle at the Y to Z axis with an offset of -5.75
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/x18.jpg

Now you have yourself a fully loaded spiral staircase. and if you want you can even give it smoothing groups and lighting and make it look all fancy.
Oh and sorry if some of you found this tutorial confusing, because it was confusing enough for me to explain things, which is why I provided screenies LoL. And for those that did enjoy this tut, then keep practicing the technique and someday you will master it and make something like this:

Nice tutorial, very useful.

Same method I used in my tut over at RedTech only slightly modified. Does give some very good results!

Think using a solid_inv brush rather than a face for smoothing the steps works better for at the bottom of the stairs, you can spread it out a little so a player can run from any angle at the stairs and still glide up unimpeded

Pretty good brushwork.. But only If the brushes didn't split alot of times by themselves when you're moving the vertex's.. Because anybody can do that.. The real skill is in creating shapes like that but with neat tidy brushes.

Stairs look good in RF but there is an usual problem with them.
It makes a lot of faces to calculate. In a map i put a big deal of (bent)bridges then RED quickly crashed and i had to remove some.

Spiral stairs look really good but is it worth the number of brushes you won't be able to add to your map because it would make it crash?

If you make them keyframes, youll get FPS lag, but you wont crash

Good work Kerpal , that's all I can say, I mean I remember about 12 months or so you were asking questions about RED ( the how to do and the not to do and so forth etc), now It seems to me you have Mastered it (RED) and I see that you take great pride in what you are doing , PPL like you will always make great maps !

Ohh and BTW your last uploaded map (dm-marauder) Is a gem !

Keeping the standard is the hardest part now, which I'm sure you will and can do!

If you have a copy of 3DsMax. Use that.
In 3dsmax8 you can even create prefab spiral stairs an change it's properties in seconds.

However I don't like to play on levels with such a set of stairs.
It's ok when the width is big enough as in "One to the dome"

Good tutorial. It's nice that you went through the trouble of explaining this step-by-step. My only problem with it has already been stated: way too many faces. In a single-player or small indoor map this wouldn't be a problem, but as far as standard mapping goes this is extremely situational, very few would be able to pull it off without creating other problems...

yeah you're right it does create too many faces, but whether or not you want to put it in a map is entirely up to you. but I do actually know another way of making the exact same kind of spiral stairs with less faces that is easier than the one I showed you. and if you want, I can show you how.
