I'd like to know if the .3ds file format used by RF models is compatable with outside developers.
As an example, suppose I create a model in Blender (a nice, free, open-source 3d modeling environment), and export it as a .3ds file. Would it be compatable with RF?
I bring this up because the above example is something I'm hoping to do this summer (need summer project, I figure learning how to model for games is certainly worth 3 month's worth of experimenting), and don't want to waste my time if there wouldn't be something I could use it for (although the knowledge is useful in and of itself, my annual "summer projects" have to be useful in the real-world, or else I lose interest faster than a hyperactive rabbit on speed. Check my CDC for information about me actually re-opening some of my old projects!).
If this is true, this could (theoretically) open up some more modelers to RF (some might be worried that using an old, outdated version of 3ds that's been pirated might be... well illegal and out-of-touch with newer games. If Blender could do this, it could also export to other file formats supported by our games, further enhancing the modeling community). |

So you'd still need 3ds Max (version whatever was the last one compatible with RF)?
Well, I'll still model, just in my spare time ("I'm Too Sexy" plays in the background. Lol). Never hurts to know how... |

Yeah atleast theoretically you should be able to do models with blender and then import those into 3ds and then export to RF.
Anyhow you can't make character bones in other program than 3ds max because it is only program that for which tools were made.
I don't really know if 3ds max plugins would work in other programs but I doupt that greatly. |

All model files that go into RF need to be exported via the max plug-ins to make them into .vfx / .v3d / .vcm / .mvf formats. Then you use the other stand-alone tools (ccrunch and mvfreduce) to make .rfa's and .v3m's
Other programs can import, edit and export .3ds files easily enough but you still need max to export to the above formats, as well as for the RFBone plugin.
So you could do all your modelling outside of max, but you wont get it into RF unless you or someone else exports it into an RF format with max. |
