Since I started mapping again, I'm coming across all kinds of crazy bugs that I never did before. For example, in one of my last maps, Sky Kingdom (shameless plug), there is a place in the top level of the tower where weapons don't work. Its as if you're off the edge of the map. They show the start of the firing animation and then nothing happens. Anyone know why this happens? I'll accept wild theories as well... although I'm pretty sure its not aliens or leprechauns . This bug drove me crazy trying to eliminate it I never did. The map still plays ok although I have had a few queries from people who have found the bug while playing.

Also, another map I worked on had some bizarre problem where adding any further brushes caused the whole level to blank out. Its like you selected all the brushes and hit the hide button. Then if you deleted the offending brush, everything came back again. I've never seen this before and given how little detail the map contains, I would not have expected any problem whatsoever. Any ideas on that one?

Crappy,Not Top Level* Progammers, inferior language/compiler, and lack of testing.

...all contribute to programs' preformance...or in this case, lack of.

On another note, it seems we and another few bugs to the list for RED editor. Admitivly, the community has overcome/bypassed bugs before, looks like we'll add this to the list of 'unsolved'.

Unless, of course someone replys with an anwser, in which case I'd be wrong

For the first problem, well that really only seems to happen when the player is outside the level, so other than checking your portals etc I can't think of another reason for it happening.

As for the second problem, I had this for a map very recently (for the competition actually, before all the who-har about deadlines). It seemed to happen when I added bent cylinder (read: complex) brushes. I think there may be a hard limit as to how many faces RED can render, if it goes beyond the max it may revert to 'show nothing' mode.

I found that if I calc. lighting or changed to 'show everything see-through' mode then it re-showed everything. Though that may just be a quirk of my graphics card

Hmmm well neither of these maps approached any RED limits whatsoever.
The one with the dead weapon area doesn't have any portals at all and the location is definately inside the level. Maybe portals would have solved it but I have difficulty with holes popping up when I used them.... and there should not have been a problem in the way that I did use them either grrrrr.

about your second problem, does it look something like this?:http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/mlewis09/weirdbug.jpg
I got this by taking abunch of brushes and mesh smoothing them together, then built and calculated lights and they looked the same each time.

I have seen the second problem appear when to many faces have been extruded or tampered with. The disappearing sound has happened when there is to many different sounds in a map, or the weapon is close to an invisible brush connected to a custom sound.
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.    Modified Mar 12th, 04:47am by Lace

Kerpal - I guess that something like it. No textures render. I suppose RED somehow gets confuses and thinks every brush in the level is solid, but how that happs in a mystery. There certainly aren't a huge number of faces in the map I had trouble with, although there were some extruded faces which may have been a problem as Lace suggests.

Actually yes, I'd done that too on my map. Changed nearly every face to high detail

Well I have experienced both bugs alot.

Gun fire bug.

Already been mentioned about Out of level, but I actually found another location this can occur on. if using a Face brush for a portal (cutting a large area in half is where it happened for me) if you press fire at the instance you pass through the portal it creates the gun fire bug.
Yours may be another wierd and wacky problem though from the sound of it. I blame Fry with the Popcorn in the Microwave

Dissappearing brushes

This one is a doozy. I have had ALOT of problems with this, yet mine may be slightly different to yours. at some points it happens with a simple 4 sided rectangular corridor, when i add another corridor or room to it (4sided) the previous brushes just dissappear. Delete the brush, they reappear. it doesn't make sense.

Flying Mover

This one has happened to me a few times, i think it happened with other stuff too such as objects and groups... Basically playing around with a mover, and BAM it dissappears. Turns out it hasn't Dissappeared, just flown upto 2000M outside the level. Had a Door brush jam in game, the door opens fine first time, second time it sounds like it opens but it doesnt, walk outside the trigger.... door opens then closes quickly. Only solution i found is to delete the group, mover then redo it.
Trying to find old players. Anyone about? Drop me a PM or reply to this thread:

I think i have found a solution to the second problem by adding more portals to a map

EDIT: i am gonna try to recreate the problem and see if the results will be the same

EDIT2: yup portals should fix the problem

I guess portals are a possible solution, but in maps that are in an outside setting, its sometimes difficult to use them. I tried in the map I mentioned... its DM Toast now on L4Y... and it didn't help. Not that I tried every possible way of using them.

I will see if i can recreate that error on that map and try to fix it

EDIT: I made the map crash in the Editor when i added a portal after the problem happened.......

EDIT2: Portals should do the trick i just changed the size of the only portal in the map and it got fixed

EDIT3: I found out that if there are too many faces in a map it will give u the same problem so it could have something to do with faces.

It's DM Toast now on L4Y...
'
SHHH. It I haven't really made a post announcing the new levels that "are available" for downloading here on the site. I didn't want to do one so close to the mapping competition results. I'll probably officially make the news post tomorrow. For those that can read , they can follow this link to where they are available NOW:

Had some fun in Office Space a couple of nights back. As usual, there's alway someone who just HAS to geomod every single floor in the place. People were fall through a hole in the upper floor where the nuke respawn is and when they landed, they'd turn invisible to everyone else. From their own perspective, they saw outside the map to the skybox. Beatonator, TheBeast and myself had fun with this a few years back.

I'm right under the nuke at this point. Nobody could see me in this spot but as you can see I still got shot by stray bullets from snot.... hey that rhymed!
