Hey guys, Goober found some really strange news on the interweb but had to dash off to bed before I could say "Post this on L4Y".
http://www.geardigest.com/2007/02/19/ballmer_blames_pirates_for_slow_vista_sales/
Apparently Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is blaming the slow sales of Windows Vista on Pirated copies of the product when we all know that Windows Vista is Buggy as hell! That would explain why no one is buying it Ballmer!
Considering that this OS system is new, all the computer manufacture's have to update their new hardware for this buggy type Windows to enable it to run.
If I was you, I would stick with good old Windows XP Professional or Home Edition to maintain the "Non Buggyness" of our gaming community.
Are games going to be brought out compatible with Windows Vista now? or they still planning on keeping them all compatible to Windows XP? |

Lets look at it this way... Who will go out of their way to; backup their entire HDD on a ton of cd/dvd rw. Reformat their HDD, then proceed to purchase and install vista then reinstall all the drivers for all their hardware componets (which are questionable to if they are ven compatible with vista.) Then proceed to get all the updates, install antivirus, and other necessary spyware protection. Finally they can begin the long boring process of reinstalling all their favorite apps and moving over their files from their backup cd's (or external HDDs) and hope that most programs and games are compatible.
Not many people would want to do all that I think. Just because a new OS is released doesn't mean that we all have to get it because its an update of the current OS... I can rant on further regarding why vista was such a failure but I think I established my point. |

Crysis will run on XP.... direct X10 is not essential to run Crysis. Halo 2 on the other hand will probably be Vista only... cos M$ suck. |

I've seen a fair few games state Vista only... admittedly they've all been owned by MS.
Independent developers will probably produce XP/Vista games for a good few years yet... they want their games to be bought by as many people as possible so will make their games to run on as many PC's as possible.
Microsoft however are trying to force people to spend $$$ on their new OS when we're still happy with XP so all their games will be Vista only from now on. Pretty much guarrenteed.
Still, there's not that many MS games you *must* buy. Not enough to warrant the cost of a new OS anyway. |

At this time, I have no plans to upgrade to Vista. A friend tried the beta version and wasn't able to run Red Faction on it. That's not the reason I am not upgrading. My reason is what Garner stated above.

As far as Microsoft games, I have yet to buy one from them. I haven't found one that I liked, that includes Halo. I know we have it/support it at this site but that doesn't mean I have to like it. |

Maybe Microsoft are a little way over their heads on this. They blaming the poor sales on Pirated copies of Vista, they don't want to admit that its buggy. They recon that their product is finished... OR maybe they made Vista buggy purposly so that they can make money off Tech Support. |

I think they over estimated the amount of people who would just buy it for the sake of buying it.
I have no intention of getting Vista until my next PC... and even then I might just stick with XP because I paid an arm and a leg for that... and Vista costs two arms and a leg.
Seriously... the cost of the OS is probably another factor. That and the 7/8 different versions is confusing to people.
Bring back the days of Windows98. You wanted the OS, you bought it. End of story. Now you have to buy the one that suits your needs (and pay for the privilege naturally...)
So to sum up why I think Vista isn't selling well..
1)
XP is still more than capable. Vista's new security features are still being debated whether or not they're actually any better than XP SP2...
2)
Its too expensive. Its not like MS are going to go bankrupt if they halved the cost of the OS. They'd probably sell a lot more copies this way... the cost of the OS is the single biggest reason why people pirate the thing in the first place.
3)
Confusing number of versions. XP Home and Pro was a good split. If someone couldn't realise the difference there, they were dumb and probably shouldn't be using a computer in the first place... but the amount of Vista versions is pure madness.
4)
Common Sense.
Anyone in IT knows you have to be either really stupid or stupidly rich to use something new. Its going to have bugs. Its going to have programs that dont work. Its not going to be as responsive as they're used to.
You sit back, wait 6-12 months and then see if the problems the beta testers... erm I mean paying customers... reported when the product launched have been solved. Only then do you actually consider buying it... |

Perfect sense doesn't make sense to a company that size.
One person can make sense of it. So can two. A small company can as well. But at some point a company gets so big that it takes on its own character traits and is like a living thing. Suddenly its out of control and unable to understand its customers. |
