Is there a way to make RF portable (for say a USB drive or a DVD?)? As far as I know, the game's only Registry requirement is a key that points to the install path. Seems to me that a simple hack could work around this.
The install path key is located under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ->SOFTWARE ->Volition ->Red Faction
PS For the n00bs who must ask: would you like more dedicated gamers joining us? These 10 people that I might be able to talk into playing RF could take down just about anyone with enough practice. My next thing, obviously would be to get a clan going and wipe out <L-S>for good. 10 skilled players against literally hundreds of n00bs. Let's play the Counting Game. Count the shells, suckers! (just kidding )).
The only thing really stopping us from getting crazy in RF is the supposed lack of portability (we can't install anything on the school's computers, their (cough*stupid*cough) no-modification policy which makes "illegal" all installations of software they didn't put on themselves. Thus the "needs to run from DVD or USB drive"), and possibly the graphics (the main force who motivates the "undecided gamers" really lives for graphics. I'm hoping the pure ownage RF can offer would be enough to offset this). |

Yes you are able to do that, it depends where you install like on mine it is C:/Game/Redfaction, just copy it all on to USB then put on other computers.
but then it is easyier to have erors if you Copy it wrong
Just Zip up the Redfaction File and their you go
i didnt no any thing about copying a path Key in that HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE thingy (i neva thought of doing it) but it works fine, and red ed works also |

So it doesn't need the Registry key? Interesting, as only an idiot would unnecessarily create Reg values like that (not saying Volition is full of idiots, but that I've never seen a Registry value that was utterly useless like that).
Gamer's Disk
See, I actually plan to make my own "prepackaged" RF with all the most common mods, levels, etc. Were it up to me, that'd be the only way to make RF (force all those 1 usd Amazon dealers to throw in a DVD with all the good maps, and I'm sure more people would buy RF). I plan to also package several other games onto one DVD, but I probably won't RAR it (RAR pwnz Zip ). It'd just take up too much time to decompress and would be highly obnoxious to carry around that many games (it would look like I'm trying to shove games down their throats).
While I'm here, I'll also hijack my own thread. Can anyone suggest any great games (FPS, RTS, RPG, etc) that have a nice multiplayer (preferably playable on dialup, but not necessary) with LAN capability (99% do out of the box anyway if they've MP), are portable (as in can throw it on a DVD and still run it), and have relatively low requirements (we're not looking at Quake 4 or UT 07 here. In fact, lower requirements are recommended over the higher-end games)?
Games List
Also, no one ask for a copy of my disk when I finish it. It'd cost entirely too much for me to ship it anywhere decent. Just get them yourselves or e-mail me for a list at earl[IgnoreThis]euradere [at] gmail [dot] com. Obviously, read what's in the brackets ([]'s), and don't literally type it in. Ex: [at] = @. [IgnoreThis] = "Don't type this. Pretend like it's not there". Just throw in a decent subject line like "Gaming DVD List Request for Vidi44", and you'll get the list when it's done. Should take me about a week to compile the list (read above about suggestions for the disk). |

Yeah, in fact I made seweral months ago test that can RF be writen to single DVD disc instead of 2 CDs, and there be added needed updates etc tools for developers, and that did work flawlesly.
However prior getting more players to RF there should be made a patch that prevents online cheating in currently known form, and blocks trainers from working. I don't know if 1.30 UNOFFICIAL really prevents trainers such as myth working.
What is more complicated is that RF was made to use "tga" textures which are uncompressed pictures that take a lot of diskspace (on DVD that does not matter).
However I am almost certain that volition does not like if someone starts to sell RF disc even for price 1 $/€/£ plus postage fee, and claim that they don't profit at from that.
Anyway as I mentioned about stopping cheating in current form, I might have found howto patch that flaw that allows current form of cheating, however to proof that to be either true or false, I need someone who can modify rf.exe for few changes.
Anyway I really hope that RF can be risen again to popular game |

So, i put all the RF files on my usb stick, i insert the usb stick in another computer, and i can play from the memorystick ? That would be GREAT !
EDIT: so i did, i runned RF.exe from the usb. but then it loads the RF from my computer, because i removed glasshouse n the USB version, and i could still play glasshouse |

My suggestion for saving disk space: find someone willing to resize all of the TGA files to half their current size. This should cut the file size nearly in half and lower system requirements a great deal. I think it'd more practical to sell old 128MB USB flash drives than DvD's or CD's. Flash drives are rewritable, meaning if a game requires rewriting files there'd be no problem. CD's and whatnot would have problems saving settings and ban lists and game states. Just something to keep in mind. |

The registry key is automatically created if its not found thats why u don't need to copy it
And yes u can play RF on a USB stick as long as the Reg key is pointed too the version in the USB stick |

Sorry for sounding a nOOb here but my copy of red faction is installed on my D drive with a no cd patch as are all my games cause I like to keep the disks for installing only (scratches etc) now recently I formatted my C drive and reinstalled windows, now some games like red faction/ enemy territory etc still work as soon as I click on them. Other games tho like Pro Evo and Tiger woods needed to be reinstalled ..............................WHY???? |

Backing up your registry defeats a large part of the purpose of reinstalling Windows. If you keep your Windows copy clean then you won't need to install as often. If you're really worried about scratching your disks then buy some backup software and back it all up digitally. |

It can be ported, but that assumes you'd be willing to hack your PSP, find someone who know how to program in whatever language RF was written in, decompile the code (illegal) and recompile it back into a PSP-friendly game. So yeah; possible but not likely. |

Yes you can have RF on PSP but its like quake 1 Graphics as it based on the Quake 1 Mod Engine
All you have to do is download CS for PSP then edit it to look like RF |

A portable device running an operating system and game is very unlikely, as it would take a huge amount of resources. |
