Hey guys, I'm sure some of you know me.. <Voltz>Kristi or Annette -hDkP- Anyways... I got a new computer, right? But I can't play Red Faction.. now some of you can now the pain I am going through.

The video card I am using is an NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT and I am using a DUAL core AMD processor "AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core provessor 5000+ 2.61 GHz" to be more precise.

When I try to play it it says:

"Error: Unable to initialize DirectX 8.0 -- Device Creation Failed!
File CROJECTSRF_PCvsdkgrdorectxgr_direct3d.cpp - Line: 1885"

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I've messed with the reloution on my monitors and on RF, but nothing is working.. and I NEED RED FACTION!

try this click on start then run and type in dxdiag a screen will appear and at the bottom of the screen it will show you what version of direct x you have you need 8 or above the latest version being 9c

At least I think that is correct I am by no means a computer wizz.

Thanks! I just now updated direct X and that was the problem. I was going on here to tell people that I fixed it.. but you were right. All that was needed was an update. Thanks a lot.

But now there's another problem.. everyone jumps around.. like.. they're all laggy.. anyone know what that problem is? It couldn't be my video card, could it? Isn't my that video card a good one? What's the problem?

My friend said it might be my RAM.. I have DDR2 800.. isn't that good RAM? It's messing RF up,though

When you say every1 jumps around do you mean on multiplayer over the internet if so then it is most likley either your connection speed to the internet or perhaps you are going on a server that is overcrowded with bad pings try looking for a server with a low ping tho to be honest I have a great connection with my set up but it's still hard to find a server with a good ping on RF.

The lag is due to your processor. I've heard dual core and hyper-transport can cause problems in older games. To disable hyper-transport you'd need to go into your motherboard BIOS. If you don't know anything about this I strongly suggest you find some one knowlagable to help, as it can cause serious hardware damage if configured incorrectly.

Yeah.. that's what I did. Well, not in BIOS, but I used the program on XP that lets you run older programs on older OS's.. it worked fine.. Red Faction just didn't know what processor to use.

Thanks, though.. and no.. it wasnm't my internet. I'm not a noob.. at al.

Blimey sorry for trying to help tho ya question for help was a little vague as you did not state where you were having the lag and I just thought maybe you were a nOOb as you had a basic problem with directx.

I am so glad you corrected my mis-judgment of your character Kristi Thanks

Run the game in windows 98 compatibility mode:
Run Older Programs on Windows XP <--link
That should/might fix your jumpiness problem.

Again, I will state that the skipping issue with dual cores is not entirely due to the entirety of processors being dual core. I have my Athlon64 X2 4200+ @ 3GHz running all programs, including Red Faction with NO issues.

Even @ stock speeds I experience no issues. And Kristi, your 7950GT card came with a disk, on that disk is DirectX 9.0c along with the nVidia Drivers. Unless you got it OEM or from a non-retail location which only offered the card and no software with it.

No. I got it from New Egg.. it came with the drivers. RF works fine now after direct X and the Windows program that Frank suggested.

Thanks!

Just strange though that it didn't install DirectX when you installed the drivers.

Anyway, glad you got it working. Enjoy the game ^_^

Maybe he opted to NOT install them.

Your welcome! The skipping problem is something that came along with Windows XP. Don't blame the makers of Red Faction as when they developed the game, XP wasn't around.

I do now, sorry.
I just always assume that RF players are men because of the type of violence it involves.
What makes it even harder is the fact that a lot of male players play with female skins.
Are they trying to tell the world something? *
Are they afraid to fully come out of the closet? *
Is it that they just use the woman character because she is a smaller target to hit and she/they seem to run/walk faster then male characters.
If my comments offend anybody, I do apologize but males playing with female characters offends me too.
* Opinions express in the statement/s above is/are only my personal opinion/s and do NOT represent the opinion/s of this site.

Edit: I just noticed that you are a Valentine baby.
Happy Birthday in case I forget to say it next month.

I think it might be all of the above, although I think the girls are a lot harder to hit.. and I think I'm like the only girl besides Gotya that likes Red Faction and FPS.
