So, I've been running this dedicated server for awhile now. I use RF server assist, I have a D-Link DI-604 router. The computers on my network have static IPs. The server is 192.168.0.122 on the network. In the RF launcher and RF server assist, I have specified port 7756. On my router I have also specified port 7756. Here is a screenshot:

It doesn't seem to matter WHAT I do, the port of my server changes almost every time I need to restart it, and it is always something like 6####. (ie right now it is 62682.) NOT EVEN CLOSE to what I want. An interesting note, when the server was temporarily moved to the Hard Drive Cafe for the LAN party, the server showed up on port 7756 no problem! I think the router there may have been a linksys, and none of the IP's were static (but I didn't worry about it `cause it was only for 4 hours). Any ideas?

I take it that you did as this page explains to set up the static IP:

http://portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

I still prefer to use this run command though:
cmd /k ipconfig /all to set up the static Internal IP address.

WOW crazyjack1994 that is a lot of ports that you are leaving open. I guess if you still have XP firewall running, you are still somewhat safe from hackers.

Yep. Just like that.

Quoting Mr.Hz
your outside port or your inside port ?
and what do you restart RF? PC? router?

Hmmm.. definately the outside port b/c using BlackScan's servers browser, (or the RF game itself for that matter) the port you see is the 6####. As for the inside port.... I dont't know how to tell. it is whenever I make any kind of change like a map rotation and I stop and restart the server. But not neccessarily the actual machine. Sometimes I'll check the port # in the morning before work, I'll update my website so the gametracker link works, but then by the time I get home it's different! That happened today! I didn't even touch the server for 12 hours, but the port # changed.

Edit..

Just tried three times, each time got a different port, no matter what I entered in the router or RF server assist.

#1 60017
#2 60107
#3 60241

Note also that my teamspeak server run from the same machine uses port 8767 just like I tell it to. Why does RF have to be such a little bi%@h?

well if ur able to run servers and ppl are able to see them thats all right but if u want to join them

to find the ports they are using go to

1.start
2.run
3.type cmd
4. type netstat -an
5. scroll down to the udp bit
6.now there should be some thing like 0.0.0.0:60017 (like you said)
or diffrent.
7. now go to red faction go to multi player wait for all the servers to come up then click add server put your internal addres in and the port e.g 192.168.0.4:60017
8.now click get servers and ur server should be there

Why not just start up your RF server on port 7756, open RF Launcher, click on Setup then click on Network tab, then where it says Force Local Port, place 7755... Then you can see all servers and join your own..

well one reason it could be that your router may need high port number's to exit the router, so when you force the port 7755 or 7756 and then when u start a dedicated server and force the port 7755 or 7756 your router could read it then it will do this " oh this is a low port number it need's to be high port to exit me" so it changes it.

but i dont see what your problem is the port changes but there is nothing wrong as long as people can join your servers

There is no problem with ppl seeing or joining my servers.. so maybe I should just be happy with that; however, I want the port to remain static so that utilities on my website disply it's info properly without me having to update the port number six times a day.

I did a test, I ran a non-dedi server and to me in game showed up as port 7755, but to the rest of the world, was 60423 (or something close to that). So, I thought crazyjack might be onto something about the high port numbers. But no matter what numbers I punch into the router, high or not, they don't stay the same. Weirder still; when I take the entry out of the router altogether, it still behaves in the exact same way.

thankyou for liking my post
any way you and your network could be running many intenet services which need many ports, and your router needs ports to go outside to the public.
my router needs high ports for people to access my internet things such as redfaction. but you may force port 7755 and your router automaticly changes it to a high port for the public to gain access to it.
but your router is proberly controllnig traffic goingin and out of it so it might change the poerts very oftenly so thats why your ports keep on changing. If you whish to stop the ports from changing every 100sec's you should contact your makers of the router and ask them how to stop the ports from changing from 1 to the other.

Yours sincerly

darkman042, I'm just curious do the ports change when you have DMZ enabled on that PC as well?
As mentioned above by Jack McGuire, it might be a security feature on that particular router/switch. There might be a way to configure it. I tried looking on their site and couldn't find anything on it but an email to their support group might be more helpful.

Check to see if there's a "Gaming Mode" button somewhere in your router's settings. Just a thought, cuz I know my router has it.
Me, I hail from Thunder Bay, Ontario. I'm under-played in stereos.

Used netstat; the server is using port 7756 internally. Just the external port is changing. Called D-Link.. I knew more about their router than they did. Was going to get transfered to "a specialist" and then got disconnected.

I tried setting the server(192.168.0.122) as a DMZ. It showed up as port 60241.

No gaming mode button.

The strangest yet though, is the fact that the world sees my server even if I delete the entry from my router. AND it picks whatever external port it wants. Maybe next I'll try it direct without a router to see what happens.

If all you are worried about is the end ports being different then why don't you try using DynDNS. I use it(it's free) and allows me to add a name to Panja's web server page that displays the server when I run a server. That probably would solve your web page problem.

ive heard of something like this before, or atleast i think i have, any way you should force a high port like 50000 that's what i do and see if it changes, if it changes to a lower or higher one you will need to configure your port forwarding and triggering,

instead of just leaving red faction as 7755, make it as 7755-7756 and force 7755 and if that doesnt work just pray to god that they stop chaing ports.

thats what i did when i tried to make servers and then one night people were able to join!!.
