Hello all,
If you are a member of the public who works in a area involving customers a lot, then the topic im going to explain to you all will make sense.
For 3 years now, I have worked in a Entertainment job. This buisness I work in involve the earldly People, sometimes youngsters, coming from anywere to play a game of "Bingo".
Now at this point, some of you will be going "OMG! Spikey works in a bingo! what a loser!". Who cares what job I work in, at least I have one .
The point I like to make in this topic is "Problems At Work". I stand before you all probley ready to face the worse thing that could be a buisness Shutdown.
Thanks to the goverment of United Kingdom, My Bingo faces a "Smoking Ban" and so do many other public places like Pubs/bars etc.
85% of my bingo, customers smoke while the 15% of others do not and sit in a No Smoking Area. My boss at work has to do something about this and yet he does. He stuck this extra game into the bingo called "The Rainbow Flyer".
Ever since this new game was put in, I have been pushed around a lot to call bingo as fast as I can to gain more extra money so we can survive the smoking ban. The bingo is split into sections. We have book sales bingo and then we have Cash intervils which allows the customers to play these board games with colors on them.
I have, on several occasions, been told that I call slow by my own boss, which really disapoints me and upsets me. I had a talk with my father today, who also works in the bingo, about this issue. The talk I had with him pointed out to me that im not allowed to voice my opinions anymore, or even worse, not taking seriously.
I am at this point very frustrated and busy looking for a new job. But for the sakes of the bingo, I have to spend a lot more time putting up with my boss calling me a "Slow Caller".
Bingo calling is really a easy job but you cannot control how long a game can take... So how come its my fault that Im slow? Im doing the best I can, im working at 120% for these guys and they still demand more out of me... Before soon, I will be at breaking point and tell my boss to shove his job up his arse! or I could go the easy way by keeping my job and tell him that if im not good enough, then he can do it himself.
Just like the saying "If someone can't do it for you, do it your self!".
Does anyone else stand this issue but in a different way?
I would like to hear your issues from work because no matter what, you always have the rights to voice your opinion and to speak up for your self instead of being put down all the time!
On further note, I do not recommend anyone to work in a bingo... It Sucks! |

We also have a smoking ban here, its been in place for abvout 3 years now. It was tough for some businesses at first, but in the long run they acually profited |

I don't Think my Buisness can profit from it. The fact is we make money off Cash intervil games... customers will be going outside to have a smoke and stuff to get the stress off them |

Indeed ans they'll come back to get their money. No problem. I suppose you also serve them drinks. |

Yep, I do! We have a Drinks Bar and a Snack Bar there. But the thing is, the customers will be going outside to have their smoke when we are suppose to be playing Cash Bingo games. But this is not the topic I wish to talk upon. |

I'm currently in the process of switching jobs. Old one at a video store wasn't bad, if only my manager would act human.
Again, the same stuff you had: "you're going too slow", "you're not polite enough", etc. I've actually had to tell him that accuracy is more important than speed. What's the point in being able to pull 5 DVDs out of a drawer if 2 of them are wrong? Even being uber-polite won't help you there...
Actually, the "be uber-polite" thing bothers me the most. Anyone else find it hard to smile after the past umpteen people have shouted at you because of the prior shift's inadequacies (remember above where I said "what's the point in speed if you get the order wrong?")?
So, I'm actually planning to go into fast food, because flipping burgers/slinging hash is far easier than dealing with my psycho boss and the company's insane policies. In the meantime, I told all my friends I'm going into the carpet cleaning business (saw an advert in the newspaper, thought it was so funny that I just couldn't pass up on that joke) just to defray the "what kind of idiot goes into a McJob?" questions.
How about a side-topic, "what's the funniest (real) job you can think of, and get without a college education or breaking the law in your country?"? |

The good thing about my store is that i can say anything to my manager... anything! I know he takes as a joke but i just find it funny to swear at my manager when he tells me to do something i don't want to do...
Also, in relation to this topic, if i think that something could be changed to help the store to make work easier/get profit i will tell my manager. Sometimes they listen, but most of the time they tell me to 'shut up' which is not very nice. |

I face the same problem... When I explain crap to my boss or supervisers, im not taking seriously enough for them to listen to my opinions, even if its a good one. Boss/mangers should really listen to their employee's more often then that way, a friendly relationship with them would be great.
To be honest, I don't even think my boss is cut out to be a owner of a bingo... He does crap all when hes at work. He sits in his office playing this stupid Online poker game on his computer, rather than going out into the hall and talking to the customers to improve on his buisness! |
