You can link two computers together using what is called a 'Crossover Cable' I think I might be wrong in the name, but it's something like that.

Then you just have to put one end of the cable into one PC and the other end into the second PC, they will then be linked together, for LAN play.

Although if you want more than two PC's, you'll need a router.

hub not FTW Its not as intelligent when it comes to packet routing, resulting in more packet collisions, and slowdown.

For a small household gaming LAN a HUB and a Switch will be just as effective as each other.

A Cross-over cable is used for connection 2 PCs straight to each other. No HUB needed (when i say HUB i mean HUB/router/switch.)

To connect multiple PCs to one network, a HUB is needed. You will need Category 5 (Cat-5) cable with one for each PC going from ethernet port to HUB port.

Cross-over cable is generally red while cat-5 is generally blue.

The "internet cable" you are talking about i am thinking is crossover cable (should be white, black or red (ISPs like giving them white or black for some unknown reason)) and is used to connect a HUB or PC to your router. If i am right you can connect 2 PCs directly to one another (from ethernet port on PC1 to ethernet port on PC2)

I was just stating that a HUB could be used

I say get a wireless router and don't look back.

HUB and Cat.5 ? that is Dark Ages (5-6 years back may be)
now is usual use switch with auto negation and Cat.5e cables

Well considering its for something simple i thought i would keep it simple ... Ghostkid doesnt seem to have alot of knowledge on this so i figured a basic rundown would suffice and his knowledge would then grow from that.

Use a switcher. Don't go wireless. - pffft -

Couple years ago I threw a LAN party on my birfday. We had 11 'puters throughout the house.

Pings were excellent and so was teh wapatuli.

Wireless is more than horrid for gaming, period. If you want stable pings with no interference then get a HUB or cheap switch ($10-$30) along with some Cat5 cables (roughly $10 per 15ft). Cheap, effective gaming. No Internet required.

ALL LIES >_<

Meh, I'm on a Linksys Wireless-G Speedbooster router and notice NO difference in pings than when I am playing directly to the Cable modem.

Use wireless if...
You need to connect PC's between floors. Much better than running network cables up/downstairs.
er. thats about it.

Use cables if...
100% reliability is required. Doesn't matter how good your wireless is interference can happen at inconvenient times!
If your PC's dont move.
Cabling is not an issue or can be DIY'd out of sight.
If you transfer any decent sized files between machines. Wireless is at most 54Mbit (or non standard 108Mbit) but unless you're sitting right next to the WAP you rarely get those speed. But cabling is 100Mbit or 1000Mbit regardless of distance from the switch...

Personally I use cables for any 'static' PC's and wireless only for laptops or PC's that are just not fesible to run a cable to.

Wireless is perfectly good for gaming pings etc... but its just not good enough for high speed sustained transfers. The metal box of your PC will often interfere with the arial for the wireless reducing your speed.

So what your saying is put together your PC with no Case? Wow, i just thought of that. It would be alot easier to do work on it

Me, i always have used wires, and i probably always will. At school theyre starting to get into wireless and i do work on those and its really anoying when you get something fixed only to find out you did something to the wireless to cause it to disconnect. I also find that half the time, the wireless wont connect anyway. Thats probably because the signal is running through the full brick school with metal lockers every few feet

=D, the modem and router are on the 1st floor, and I am on the 2nd I get the highest possible signal anyway, so I don't care, lol

Also, most people don't throw their computer parts in cases so that they can volt mod to get a higher OC, then they stick em in a case and say, "HAH! FINALLY!" Nah, most people just build them without a case to do what Kingpin does, get the new parts to test them, run them, and stress them. As Kingpin currently holds the world record for 3D Mark '06 with 2x 8800GTX and a Intel Core 2 Quad Xtreme QX6800 :O That prick also has liquid nitrogen running in his 4.8GHz <_< He just happens to also work for nVidia.
