You know how you have to make the edge of decals transparent so they don't streth themselves accross the face they're on? Is there any way to save them as 24 bits/pixel and still retain the transparency? As far as I can tell, only 32 bits/pixel targas retain trasnparency when saved. Whenever I save as 16 or 24, it fills in all transparent areas with white.
Lord Seafood and Kirby is cool's decals looks like crap in RF when saved as 32, but they look real nice as 24. Problem being, if I save them as 24, they screw up the face they're on, forcing me to save them as the crap 32. Is there any way I can get the looks of a 24 and the transparency from a 32 targa? |

OK. Here's what I do. I use a freeware program called "The GIMP" version 2.2. Just search up download the gimp in google. Also get the GTK runtime environment or else thhe program won't run.
Make a new file and make the backround "transparent" and make it the size you want in pixels, cm, mm whatever.
Then make/import you texture by copying and pasting and save your file as "your_testure.TGA". (Make sure you put in the TGA)
Your texture should now working RED when you put it in your custom textures folder. This technique is also a great way to make weapon flares and new textures that need transparency.
I only suggest the GIMP vecause i am familiar with it and find that its an easy program to work with. you may be able to use the same sort of technique in other photo editing programs such as PSP.
Hope this helps. |

This is off topic... But, gimp is trash... Why does it have to be the only program that works properly with RF other than outdated psp7?
I cant get adobe photoshop CS2 to make textures properly. it has a weird way of saving files... BAH! |

Gimp may be trash compared to Photoshop, but its also free, you dont usually get much free..
Photoshop 7 and Gimp can make transparent textures for RF... ive also heard that Paint Shop Pro 7 can, but ive never used it. |

I have to agree with you on that, PS CS2 has some nice new options, but I still use PS7, because I just think it works Nicer. |

Kirby is cool tried what you suggested and all it did was save it as a 32 bit/pixel targa just as PS can (it didn't give him a choice). I'm not just trying to make the edges transparent though. If that was the case, then PS already gives me that. What I'm trying to do is give it transparent edges, and make it look good in RF, like the 24 bit/pixel makes it.
If not though, then I guess we'll just have to stick with Kirby is cool and Lord Seafood's decals looking like crap. Bah! |

You can try Irfanview. It's a free image viewer/converter. It supports many formats and has quite a few conversion options.
If you can get your hands on a copy of Paintshop Pro 7 that'd work also. PSP7 always saves in 24-bit. It has no 32-bit option, not for TGA's anyhow. |

PSP? Nah, I'm a DS man myself. haha j/k
I'll give it a shot sometime. I have another problem though. It doesn't have to do with decals, but I figured I'd post it here anyway so I don't have to make another topic. It is still about transparency though.
Anyway, my new problem is getting transparency to work on regular brush faces. How do you do it? Basically I'm making what you could most simply call it, a chain fence (it's really a grid floor though). It's transparent and everything, and will work perfectly if it was a decal, but as a texture on a face it doesn't, it just becomes white in the transparent areas.
Any ideas how to make it work? I know it's possible. Theres a chain fence default texture that works just the same afterall. |

Try making the brush a detail. Select the brush in brush mode, hold ctrl and press "P" then tick "detail".
Also, if you're making a chainlink fence I reccomend making the brush a face rather than a 3-demensional shape, it saves on the face count. |

Actually it's a platform in the sky. 16 sided cylinder with thick edges and a thin (1 face thin) grid in the center. I'll get a pic of what it looks like in the real level and post it a bit later on.
Edit: Just tried making it a detail. Didn't work.
Edit: Here are some pics I just took. This is what the platform is supposed to look like.

Edit: Alright, I got it workin'! Turns out making it a detail worked after all. I just forgot to rebuild geometry when I tried before. Thanks for the all the help and support guys! =D |
