I got a solution for Mac users trying to download .rar files using Safari.

Is this what it looks like when you download a .rar file - a window filled with text?

To avoid this, when presented with the download - right click the link and select Download Linked File. It will download as a .rar.txt file. When it is finished downloading, delete the .txt from the file name and then you can decompress it normally.

Also: There is a solution but I do not know the implications of the following statement.

Safari generally trusts the Content-Type header, so if it displays a file as text, that's what the site is saying it is. Firefox looks at the actual file contents in some cases to see if the Content-Type is plausible, but that is a concession to the sheer number of misconfigured sites which "work in IE". I believe IE bases its decision of how to handle the file on the extension that the URL ends in, which is just wrong.

I think Safari does content sniffing for some extensions, like .dmg. Anyway, all that to say, if the site was serving the file with the correct Content-Type then Safari would be handling it correctly.

It's a simple trick which can also be used on Windows. If you want to protect a private file from being opened, simply open it in notepad, save as TXT, then delete the original.

To get it back, simply open the TXT in Notepad and save as your previous file type... .RAR, for example.

Or you could just rename it...

Doesn't work if your system is set to hide file extensions, which, with default settings, it is.

Well, I would first like to differentiate the difference between "got" and "find". I "got" a solution from the great crew who have been there and done that, Inside Mac Games Forum. I figured there was a solution along these lines but my free time to trouble shoot is severly limited. I did not actually "find" or figure this out on my own, I will confess for the sake of honesty.

I like sticky things - both good and bad.

Edit: The newest versions of FireFox for the MAC platform will download .rar without a problem.
