I'm more than sure this is an old question, but I'm going to ask it anyway.
Is there any [legitimate] way I can play the single-player portion of Half-Life 2 without internet. My gaming rig does not have internet (I'm not one for multiplayer) and I understand you have to verify that you actually bought it by getting a Steam account (even though a simple CD-key would work).
I haven't seen this question addressed on here, so any answers are welcome.

Due to recent (and ongoing) piracy problems hitting Valve over the last year, the company has decided to take a leaf out of Microsoft's book. All copies of Half-Life 2 bought in stores (not through Steam) will require online activation akin to how Windows XP is activated. If you don't activate the game, you can't play it full-stop, not even in single player
Nope, you can't

just hop over to a firends house that has a broadband connection.. and verify the stuff..
its a pain in the CENSORED . but much more efficient way of making sure the software is legit... cd keys are too easy to fake.

Not so lame, got for combating the cd hacks and stuff. Playing Half Life 2 offline: Once installed, verified and updated online, you can play Half Life 2 without having to be connected to the Internet. To do this, follow the Steam Configuration instructions further below. Then whenever you want to play offline, make sure you don't have an active Internet connection and launch Half Life 2. When prompted, select the 'Play in Offline Mode' option and the game will load and play offline.

I know it's a old thread but I agree with you.
I disliked having to do the updates through VALVE. When I reformatted the hard drive, I choose NOT to reinstall it. I have DSL and it's still a pain to update the game. I don't care about piracy. I BOUGHT THE GAME!
Piracy is the company's problem, why should it have to be mine as well.
The VALVE system makes me want to boycott any games that might need that to play the game.
It's one thing to have to do it to do updates but to install it. THAT IS JUST WACK!
