This is sort of an offshoot of this thread. Garner was talking about TFT monitors, what exactly are those and how are they different to LCDs or CRTs?
There was also a lot of talk about refresh rates compared to resolutions and from it I gather 1280x1024 @ 60Hz isn't too healthy for me. |

I got a lcd and its brilliant.
My desktop is 1280x1024 @ 85hz but i think i remember saying refresh rates dont do anything on lcd?
Not sure but the picture is clear as anything and its wicked for games. |

I'm at 1024 x 768 @ 85Hz.
Just set mine to 1152 x 864 @ 85Hz. The size is just right, no offense, but the 1280 x 1024 text, etc. is just too small for me! lol |

Thanks for the links Chipgoober and UglyDonkey. A TFT seems to be like an enhanced LCD?
I know there is another type of monitor not available yet. I think its called OLED. |

Yeah, a TFT is one of many forms of Liquid crystal display.
There are also different types of panel on top of that too, most fast panels are TN film, (twisted neumonic or something like that) then there are MVA, PVA, OLED, they are all better at different things. speed, colour reproduction, brightness, black point. I havent bought one yet because I am too bloody indecisive (and bloody skint now I bought a car and have to move flat, though I dont mind the new pad is a bloody palace! for £366pcm ) maybe in june or july I might be able to afford one! |

The text size is only too small if the display area of the monitor is less than bout 16" on the CRT'S, my 19" CRT is fine. |

Dont have an aweful lot of choice round here unfortunately. Well nothing below about 300 at least. I live near my work, but unfortunately the area is one of those 'yuppie ville's for all the gits that work in central london (and on a bit more dough than me probably). I really have to get into real estate, buy somewhere and rent the sucker out, that way someone can pay my mortgage for a change instead of always being the otherway around!
Anyhoo, enough moaning! If anyone in planning to endulge on the tft front, check out http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=85 some very good advice from some very knowledgeable people. A dude by the name of BadAss seems to be the resident expert. |

I'll have to look into a TFT in the coming months.
Also does anyone know what screen the new G5 iMacs are using? I use one at college and its not a CRT or LCD although it shares characteristics of each. |

true, but then again, yours is a one bed, price comes down when your sharing, this place is pretty pricey for a 3 bed, but they are 3 double beds, so i guess you can expect it to leap towards 4 bedroom money! I think if i were to buy it this place would be in the region of £250k at least.
Or I could live in a tent and save over 5k a year in rent and bills! 5k would buy me a decent screen I think. shame that i wouldnt be able to plug it in anywhere!
Where abouts are you living? my first flat round here (Hemel Hempstead) was £500, that was a studio flat in someones loft, i was definitely paying their mortgage, and they were definitely loving it!
The G5 uses a tft/lcd panel just like any other flat screen monitor. you would know if it was a crt, it would be about a foot deep! |
