Well? Would be pretty cool, wouldnt it? Have a L4Y dedicated server where we can all hang out and stuff. Maybe have all of the most popular maps put on it. Could prove to be interesting. We just need someone to host it.
Input, anyone? |

mmm, there was a good one a while ago, but the chick running it went schizo and alas no more server. I think your best bet is Franks Dedicated. Enter stage right Frank ... |
If I ever get to where I am going, will I know when I am there? |

Frank enters...The bad thing about is that when you go on and ask what levels should be played. Every mapper and their mother wants their levels played.
When you say most popular, then that would be W.R.E.C.K.S.'s MicroFaction series and there already is one that is run by Trump I think? It's called "Micros 24/7 NO Mod".
I usually run a few selected maps that my friends suggest and then right before the server is going to switch to a default. I insert one of mine in. So if you are ever in my server and you see one on my levels playing, it's almost a sure bet that a couple of default maps will follow.
See that's the thing, everybody always wants custom maps but when it comes down to it. The only way to keep a server full is by running default maps. As soon a custom map comes into play BOOM we loose most if not all players. Sometimes even me. LOL I have a different selection of levels on my server's multifolder than I do on my gaming PC. |

I remeber a time when Hooaah's rotation was deemed news worthy.
Would it be too much to ask that a few custom servers rotations were posted as news? Like your's, Stu's, Amero's, Hapa's, etc?
It's not as if theres any RF news apart from a weekly file update if there's enough files to warrant an update.
Maybe more people would get off their asses and join some custom servers if they knew what maps were being played. |

The permanent presence of a levels4you server is a decent idea. It would be more feasible if there were more players. Some nights I see as few as 20 players in all the world's Red Faction servers. I would consider consolidating our server resources more important than adding new ones. Can the remaining Red Faction Community come together to form up fewer but roomier servers?
Which also brings me to a point I wrestled with for several months. I host a server, why should I bother? Shouldn't I just throw in the towel and team up with NoClanFrank, Stu, Amero, or whomever? Impose my annoying gaming perspective on their map rotation? I figured "naw".
So why do I continue to run a server? It is a Mac, which makes it unique. It also uses maps which run decently on the Mac platform - including Mac Sound Safe levels. It is the lonely bastion of Mac in the PC world of Red Faction.
Back to the heart of the matter, there are stumbling blocks for custom map usage.
1. Knowledge - not all RF players are aware that custom maps can be used (Both PC or MAC users)
2. Unaware - not all RF players know about levels4you
3. Apathy - not all RF players are ambitious enough to collect the maps
Even if we blitzed the world with RF custom map propaganda - would anyone respond?
Do we need a spokesperson? I nominate a younger Bo Derek!
I don't know if adding server rotations as new news is a solution although I admit that it would give that information more prominence. There are community links, affiliates, signature links, all sorts of ways that players can find the scattered info.
Perhaps the question is - how can we organize the information of the world's RF servers into one base of operation? I have an idea, but I can't say for now because some may consider it to be to audacious.
Or are we just way too diverse to cooperate... |
I have suffered in real life for the past couple years, now its your turn! |

well, if there is a levels4you dedicated server indefinattly, we could probably get away with playing 10 people on customs now couldnt we. say have a new 10 custom maps each week and post them say 3-4 days in advance so people have a chance to get them. this way more maps will get played, more mappers will see this, and make better maps because they know people will play them. plus the reviews would be sky high. |

mhhm - custom maps always a problem, cause there are so much
players which only play default maps. i think its important that
you are often play in your own server if you want that other players
have the same maps as you're running. if they see that no one is in the server they wouldn't join it. the other think is that there should be enough ppl with rcon to ban modders. modders could destroy every good game. my opinion is that it depends on the person who
is running the server and that he is always present so ppl always
come back and play (but this need a lot of time....... *i know*) |

It's always amazed me that so many people at this site play solely default maps or Microfactions. I mean this is a site dedicated to user made files. Even when it comes to mappers there are plenty who'll only join a server if their own map is playing, preferring to play Badlands instead.

Well it couldn't hurt to have regular rotation updates posted on the main page. I mean what's the point of mappers having their creations appear in news posts on the main page for a month if they're only gonna get 20 odd downloads and never have their map appear on any servers?
If the rotations were right there on the main page we might get some casual players in rather than just the same faces I see in every custom server everyday.
That's the basic problem with any L4Y server like goober described. It might tempt a few L4Y'ers out of their normal default servers for a couple of days but after that it'd just be left to the same hardcore that already play elsewhere to fill.
In the end posting rotations as news might not really help but it couldn't hurt either could it? |

Like you have to ask, you know you already have access to do it.
Also posting certain server rotation here at the site might be feasible and can be done as well. But I think it would be a good idea to only post the rotation of the more popular server and those that only run maps that are hosted here at levels4you.com with the exception of Stu_Pidaso's server. He usually provides his own download page in which people can get files if they are not at this site.

A L4Y server would be really good, it would bring more people to L4Y. But as Genxer said, it would mean that L4Y would need more money. |

I can handle 14 players without lag. Around 16 the pings start to go above 200...... So, you should be able to do fine with around 12-14 like I am with 256Kb/s up |
