Looping sounds that is MAC friendly in Red Faction:

When_Dead
link* it to
Cyclic_Timer
link* it to
Play_Sound

Link*
This method seems to allow MAC user to play this level. If you need a picture then open up my map and check the events inside helicopter.

DM - NC-WasteLand

* You link a trigger and event together by using the objects unique id number, or by just selecting the first object, then the second object, and hitting the "K" hot-key.
I hope this helps, if it doesn't blame RED.

But for a non looping sound. I still prefer to use an ambient sound.

Can I assume the Mac version of RED/RF has all the same sounds just in aif format?

Oooo! Oooo! I gotta get my 2.5 cents worth in here!

The only time RF will crash on a sound is when the sound is tied to an event and the sound file is not present.

Ambient sounds will not crash RF - but for example - try running CorpsesXroads2.0 on the Mac. There are a lot of ambient sounds which mute out other game sounds; i.e. the assault rifle cannot be heard.

Some other examples, that I am still trying to tweak; the .aif version of the GNR sound track to RFU SkiJump mutes out rail gun and fusion sounds. The .aif version of BAWArena's metallica soundtrack mutes out precision rifle.

For the Mac RF to use sounds: AIF IMA 4:1 format 11050kHz and 22100kHz sample rates usually work best.

Just so everyone knows there is no Mac version of RED.

Otherwise, thanks for the advice - I was unaware that portals can influence lighting calculations!

Does that mean your server isn't up. I just got home and was going over the chat log on my server and I read this:
Quote
T.M.I.N.E: hapa's server isn't up
Nurse: really?
Nurse: OK
Nurse: hats odd
Nurse: *t
T.M.I.N.E: well not that I can see

I then went on to see if I can see it and no hapa server.

No RED for Mac? - I was sure there was some sort of patch somewhere ... I must have dreamt it.

What I was getting at with my assumption on sound is; can you add two lots of events for sound with each referencing the corresponding platforms music format (.wav or .aif)? Unfortunately I don't have a Mac handy anymore. Again I am making assumptions ... sound events need to have an extension referenced don't they?

All the sound events need to have the extension or else the game won't find them. I am assuming that MAC RF just converts the .wav extension to it's .aif conterpart with the user having to tell it anything. If that is the case....damn MACs are smart wanna be PCs.

Just thought I'd let ya'll know that the maps been pretty much done for about 3 dyas now. The only thing I have left to do (other than a ReadMe and 4 pics) is to make a good decal to stick on the wall.

I've got the perfect one in mind that I can use from now on, but I just don't know how to go about making it. Anyway, that's not what this topic is about so moving along.

I've decided to remove those 4 unessessary lights (just made the floor in certain parts greener to match the rest of it) from the top of the map, and to adjust the main lights that are there as well. This solved the purple problem on the top rooms acid floor and the main rooms ceiling.

I also moved the portals for the main room closer to it and that seemed to solve the purple problem on the lower walkway. I still don't understand how that worked, or how light that's not even near touching it would make it purple, but hey, it worked (and without sacrifice), so you don't see me complaining any.

Anyway, just need to get that decal made and the ReadMe written and it's good to go. I'd also like it if KIC made a decal of his own (instead of a signature pic someone made for him) but meh. I'll also be sure to include you guys in the ReadMe for all your help on this lighting problem.

I don’t see why Mac users cant just run virtual PC and do RED WORK in there.

This is because RED requires DirectX to run which virtual PC can't use or install on a mac.

Link Master hope to see and play the file soon.
On a side note, thanks for including a read me file. You don't know how annoying it is when mappers don't include it with their file. Especially new mappers, they sometimes forget to type in the level and author name in their level properties box while in RED.

I always include a ReadMe in my maps, especially for any newcomers that don't know how to use them. I know when I first started downloading custom maps I didn't know how to use them and got frustrated.

I keep file that I call a ReadMe Starter which is basically what all my ReadMe's will contain plus it's own information. I've added notes to it in yellow for this purpose of this post.

Also incase you can't tell by the bottom of the How To Use section, I will be putting the music in seperate vpps. This way if you don't want the music, you can simply not include the vpps in your multi folder to get rid of it. Also if you're on a PC there's no need to have the aif, and if you're on a Mac there's no need to have the wav. After all, even the smallest ammount of disk space saved can make a difference in the long run.

Description

[description of level]

Special thanks goes to Kirby is cool, Lord Seafood and Supermetalknux
for all their help and support throughout this maps creation, and to
[only maps with music will contain this part] Hapa Hanu for converting the wav into an aif for Mac music support.
[plus any extra people to thank such as right now]
Thanks guys! =D

----------
How To Use
----------

Extract the vpp files from the rar archive and place them inside
your Red Faction multi folder located in the user_maps folder in
your Red Faction Folder. If you're using a PC, you only need the
vpps labeled DM and PC. If you're using a Macintosh, you only
need the vpps labeled DM and MAC.

The default path for the multi folder on a PC is
C:\games\RedFaction\user_maps\multi
