I am looking for anything really simple to create a C or C++ game. Which ever one is easier.

I am a complete n00b to anything coding. Don't even know what a compiler is.

Here might help. The operative word in that sentence is might. I'd start out small, especially if you know nothing, don't try to make a game first, that's the easiest way to make it impossible.

Trust me 133 is right, I'm taking a programming course in college right now and C and C++ can be confusing. Take your time and learn it first...even if it takes longer than you wnat.

Believe me I have plenty of time to learn it. I'll check the link out when I get home.

If I were you, I'd invest in a freshman level programming book. This book helped me so much, its basically the fundamentals. (Establishing variables, repitition, writing classes, inheritance, and our dear friend polymorphism.)

I myself had started a RPG for my senior project, I've been using this tutorial to help me along.

Heres a pic of about how far I am

Now I just have to figure how to get events in game, anyone?

P.S. You can PM me w/ any questions you may have.

Ok I think I'll need a simple and free 3D Editor.

Mabye some "meshes" or whatever they are called to build on.

For now, before I graduate high school, I want to learn the basics, so when I go to college for this stuff, I'll have a little head start.

My suggestion to you, goto your local library and find a book on C or C++

And BTW Mono is a free programming utility for C.

If you haven't already, check out our Irrlicht Thread , which has some intriguing glimpses into programming using a gaming engine. Since then, we've sort of segued into general programming, and its been pretty spiffy. Sure, there's a lot of technical stuff, but we've a great selection of links on the second page and a lot of informative posts.

Also, there's no such thing as a 3D editor for creating a game, unless you're talking about creating meshes and stuff. I know that the Retribution engine (talked about in Irrlicht Thread) has an editor (its 25 MB and I haven't found a free 6 hours to download it yet), so you might want to check that out first.

Obviously, you know that the bulk of game creation is in scripting, elsewise you'd have asked for the editor first. If you're looking for an IDE (to script in), Bloodshed Dev-C++ is a very good one (linked to on Irrlicht thread).

You said you've plenty of time to learn C (or any varient thereof), and programming is a good skill to learn. Even if you don't plan to be a programmer, the ideas you can get from it (structured thinking, planning, logistics, organization, etc) can be applied to practically any technical field. Further, isn't it better to know that someday, if you ever forget to buy your kids Christmas gifts, you can take some old work and create a fairly spiffy game. Or, if you want to be uber-parent, you can work often and produce a great amount of games, give them to your kids' friends and they can all get together and play a game that you know would be free of excessive violence, drug references, pornography, and other inappropriate themes (because if they simply go to little Timmy's house, how do you know they won't be playing the next Grand Theft Auto?

If I were to make a game, it would be a free roaming 1'st person shooter based within a city, has an editor close to RED, mabeye a tool to make weapons as well. Also playable through lan because I don't have the spare cash to run a big server at age 14...

Any other ideas? Lets make this a L4Y gaming project, where we make a vidoegame!

Hey modmaker91, why don't we make an unofficial sequal to manhunt ?

Mabye, but with my mapping/modeling skills, they would be made out of legos. Hey actually, lego killing sounds like a good idea!

Sounds safe for kids!

I dunno how the olastic bag suffocation would fit in. I'll just have them beat eacother to falling apart and you could rip one of their ares offf and hit his head off like a baseball. Or mabye rip his head off and throw it at another lego guy! Mabye rip your own arm off and use that as a weapon.

Woah, how are video game developers having a hard time coming up with ideas? I just cam up with the basic gameplay of the whole game.

Lol, love the lego idea, saw this the other day, probalby been around the net for a while... Love the bit with the weapons!

I think the game would rock! Though saying that having a fully dynamic environment constructed out of lego bricks with full rigid body physics would be incredibly fun, until all the city is broken then you wouldnt have much to do!

I have to say, if the gta games starred lego men instead, would the politically correct anti-violence mob be soo pissed off?

There's already a LEGO mod for RedFaction. It's by RED-FROG.

Well if C/C++ is definately what you want to work with then there are certainly plenty of compilers available. However, you might also consider taking a peek DarkBasicPro which uses (As the name suggests) BASIC. It has built in 3D features aimed especially at game creation and FPS games are no exception. It also offers all the tools to make it multi-player over the internet. While its easier to learn than C/C++ programming its still not a breeze. At the very least it would give help you understand some of the concepts of game design which you could then take into C/C++ if you want to get more serious about it.

Oh.. BTW, DarkBasicPro isn't free but they used to offer a slightly disabled version as a trial. I'm not sure if they still do. Worth a look though.

I checked out the irrilight (I think thats how you spell it) engine, and that looks really good. Mabye when it comes out, I'll download it. All I can find are videos.

I know about the lego mod, but does it let you play in third person while beating the crap outta other lego guys with their own body parts?

And about the buildings: After you enter a mission, the buildings will re-appear like in the game Mercinaries. Mabye have the buildings enterable and having some weak spot to destroy to have the place fall in. Mabye some vehicles too, I'm not sure. And about online multiplay, I can't run a server because I don't have the money. Mabye L4Y will host a server if I make the game?
