well...i have seen this before on 1 game. counter strike source. tyically you can fix it by "alt+tab" out of the game and then back in. the cause......i believe it has something to do with processes running, and using too much of yer available ram. but...thats just a guess. ive also rebooted machine, and restarted my game to fix it. soooo.....good luck. what video card you runnin? do you have a decent processer? how much ram? how many processes are running when you start windows? what version of directX you using? any of these could be a factor for this problem.
but like i said....im not sure which. i just know what i had to do on my old system to fix the problem.
good luck

Nah, thats all nonsense, you know its those rose tinted specs!

When you say 'purple' are we talking bright magenta stylee or 'just off black'?

do you have a crt or a tft? let us know what resolution and colour depth you use. If it occurs in movies then its likely to be your monitor/gfx setup, or the software in between. what you could try is this, get a copy of fraps, use it to take a screenshot whilst you are watching the movie/playing the game, check to see whether the screenshot has the same purple colouring, fraps should pick the image straight from the buffer in memory before any software colour adjustment and before overlay surfaces are used. If you can try plugging in a different monitor, or changing gfx card.

I am running under 32 bit color and under 1024x768 screen resolution. I took a screen and will e-mail it to you so you can see my problem. I did the fraps thing and got the same purple results. If it helps any to finding how to fix it I also noticed it replaced certain shades of gray on my weapons, map.

I think I can see what you mean, I havent got cs source here so I cant check it, but I assume the horizontal bars with the green and purple hue shouldnt be there. Most odd, has to be graphics card problem. I'd recommend trying a different set of drivers in the hope that this corrects the problem, otherwise its going to be a hardware prob, possibly damage.

What graphics card are you using and are you overclocking anything?

Another thing you could try is unplugging some hardware to reduce the load on the psu, just incase its caused by a power supply issue. If you have one of the newer geforce or radeons, they require extra molex connectors for power, its worth ensuring that these are only plugged into the gfx, dont run any fans, lighs or hard drives off the same line, graphics cards create interference in the current, and are very irritable to recieving it. If you unplug the power on cdroms and any extra hard disks you can, unplug some case fans and lights then that should reduce the load enough, if the situation improves from doing this then its new psu time! People often dont regard the psu with the importance it deserves.

I've uploaded the image incase anyone wants a look. You might have some other ideas about what could cause it.
