I think a soundblaster max 30-40$ is good enough.
As Frank said, you wouldnt notice a difference in the sounds quality.
Spend your money on huge speakers rather than on just a small card that only looks cool and promisses so much for nothing.
Not sure if good soundblaster cards cost that much, maybe even cheaper. As far as I know is that onboard soundchips need CPU time to "produce" the sound. Cards usually do all this work themselves.
But they also require more Watts and sometimes block the airflow of the PC..
Onboard isnt that bad as NoClanFrank said. I cant really see a difference with cards. But they're good if your onboard chip doesnt have 5.1 sound for example.
I have destroyed my onboard sound one day, now I have to use a card.
I'm so happy that ONLY the sound is damaged, not the whole mainboard. Looks like nvidia boards have good "safety features"
I have once looped the sound signal.
The output was connected with an amplifier which was connected with my HIFI...and the output of the HIFI was then again connected to the amplifier input. lol I know I'm stupid. Usually I know where to put things in.
Not sure what happened but I think the amplifier and hifi looped the signal too often until the chip couldnt hold the power nomore. lmao
I only thought: "where is the sound! "
thats my lil story I experiment too much, but thats the way you learn things!!

I actually have 2 Creative Sound Blaster cards, on one of them the mic input is a little wacky and the reason I bought the other one. I bought both of them for 129 dollars each.
When I changed motherboards, Nitro talked me into just using the on board one. He doesn't like to add anything to PCs unless they are necessary. I bought the 160 Gig hard drive from him a while back and he actually sent me a sound card that he wasn't going to use for free. It's still in the original boxed and it's still sealed. If what you guys are saying is true. I might consider installing one of them back. The inboard sound cards do have 5.1 but it doesn't matter since I only have one bass speaker and two satellite speaks but they sound just as good as my home stereo system which I boxed up. I mean what was the point. I have all my music in Mp3s stored in my hard drive. It's easier and faster playing the music I want this way.
Special thanks to a very special German company by the name of Fraunhofer Gesellschaft the inventors of the Mp3.

I didn't know that.
I also have only 3 speakers. Stereo sound is good enough I think.
I never heard a 5.1 system in action, so I dont miss it
The only thing I don't want to miss is a boombastic sound, and I mean BOOMbastic, hehe. (built a box wih 3 large speakers in it ) It's very cool to live in a one family house. -better: living in the outback like Kiliad does
Too bad we'll have to move next year or so. Probably the "good times"(?) will be over then.
edit.. oh sorry for bringing up an old thread
