Has anyone tried Zalman cooling fans and heatsinks?!
I need to purchase one for my vid card, it overheats while playing Battlefield 2 or F.E.A.R. And when I say overheat, it hits OVER 70C! As it idles at 40C... I am thinking about this Zalman fan/heatsink:
ZALMAN VF700-CU 2 Ball VGA COOLER
Or does anyone know of something better I can get for my card. Price isn't really something I am worried about, but I don't want liquid cooling. And it has to be able to fit for that 1 slot, because I have a sound card right below it, and no more free PCI slots. |

But how would you change the cooling fan of your card?
I don't think that there are cooling fans made for all types of graphic cards. Correct me if I'm wrong...I thought that heatsinks often have different sizes, that would mean the "attachement points" are on different places on many cards.
My graphics card was passive-cooled only (no fan attached on the heatsink). I can't live with stuff like that so I bought a larger (lil too large), but cheap, noname fan and fastened it on the heatsink with some screws.
But make sure the fans weight isn't too heavy. Otherwise the fan will pull down the heatsink from the chip(s) and the heat will not be absorbed good enough.
That ZALMAN cooling fan looks fantastic!
But how come your graphics card gets so hot? Is it passive cooled only? Perhaps the air flow is blocked somewhere, the warm air of the graphics card cant go out? |

It is true, however, there are universal heatsinks, and this is just that.
My sound card lies directly below my vid card, so the heatsink and fan are pulling air from the semi-cool sound card. The sound card doesn't ever get hot, but the vid card ONLY gets hot when I play BF2 or FEAR. ONLY those games. So, I lowered the gfx performance of FEAR to Low(Not minimum), and it runs smooth. I will lower BF to Medium(It's default was high). But still, it shouldn't run that hot! lol
I'm going to order some Arctic Silver 5, and probably that fan/heatsink, but I wanted some feedback on anyone that may own one.
Or maybe I'll just order the arctic silver 5... |

yeah they are supposed to be pretty good ... havent tried them though ... made of copper, thin fins, looks like its good too.
but just because it looks good doesn't mean it is, my Power Supply "looked good" but then one day i turned it on and it made louder bangs than fireworks found in missouri (... missouri has loose firework laws for those who don't know ... they are like the mecca of fireworks around here.)
Edit: did you even notice all the people who rated it gave it five out of five stars? |
