When I was playing with different Front Side Bus speeds, I noticed that the game run faster with a LOWER FSB. No kidding...and no I'm not that stupid

My mainboard is running with a FSB speed of 200Mhz (multiplier x11 I think) equals a CPU speed of ~2,2Ghz
Now, when I load up a level (it was one of my maps, I didn't do further intense testing on other maps) and fly up to an area where the most part of the level is visible. (a wide open indoor map)

I can't remember the frames I had, but it was around 40fps with a FSB of 200Mhz. I tab-switched to FanSpeed to change the FSB (not the speed of the Fans.. )
I wanted to know how much performance I'll lose when the CPU, RAM and everything related to the FSB works slower. Instead of getting less frames per second, I got MORE/HGHER fps, around +10 or +15fps when I set the FSB to 170Mhz (=1870Mhz)

This was a very strange experience, since the whole computer should run slower with a slower FSB. UT2004 isn't the best game for testing the CPU speed, it is more graphics card based, unless there is some activity (Bots etc)

I don't want to proove that a computer runs faster with a slower FSB, lol. Of course when physics, bots, lightning etc need to be calculated you'll get a slower performance. I thought I knew much about hardware but this makes no sense to me. It's like my hardware isn't working properly..
(I'm guessing its one of the 2 RAM sticks, since they were made by different companies and have slight technical differences. They might break the system and make it unstable... uhm...who knows
Or its the crappy Radeon 9550 (not so crappy, but you know...it's never fast enough )

If you want to try it yourself, don't put the FSB too low (like under 120mhz when 200 is normal) The system may crash (depending on system and settings), booting the PC MIGHT become impossible. Cmos has to be deleted if that happens I thought I screwed my PC when that happened But before pulling the PC out of ur window put ur hands on the jumper first and try) I was so exited about the framerate I couldn't stop decreasing the speed

Two reasons:
1.) Your comp is messed up if it runs slower on something faster

2.) Unreal Engine 2 (UT2004 version though) is designed to run decently on lower end comps, including those that are slower.

I would test the pc on a few more games, UT isnt always a great game to test in bench marks, different games can be either gfx limited, processor limited etc.

Actually, you may also be supprised to find that hardware doesnt always run best at the fastest speed. The problem is that changing the clock speed of components can lead to circumstances where the algorithms playing out inside the chip do not time correctly at the higher speed, this can lead to the 'instability' people typically find when they over clock past a certain point.

What you have to remember is that there is a finite time it takes to turn a transistors state. Inside the chip the various circuits responsible for additions, multiplies, carry saves, priority encodes, etc all work by passing them an input and causing a cascade of logic. If you up the speed of the clock trigger then you can get cases when the next stage in a pipeline is triggered before the result of the last stage is complete, stalling forwards and causing the hardware to wait and miss a cycle till the result is availiable, or going ahead with incomplete info or causing the cascade to stop, locking the hardware completely.

Additionally on a higher level, the transfer of data across the busses to and from disks caches and ram, can all cause stall conditions. The true art of setting up computers is getting the pc into a state where the processor and ram are working together at as higher speed as possible, not just upping the speed of one or two components. remember the PCI bus, the disk controllers, the ram, etc are all dependent on the fsb speed, and not all can be clocked as highly as the processor may.

Well spoken, cyrus5. Now I understand.
So this means my CPU is sending packages but some of my hardware isn't ready to recieve it - package loss (if you will)
That means the CPU has to send it again. (or something like that)

When I slow down the FSB speed, the hardwares speed is almost synchronos (spelling?) to the CPU and works "more stable" or "more efficent"?

This is just my theory of course..and it prooves yet again that if you buy a dual core cpu bundled with some rubbish RAM you aren't going to be happy

It runs well on my old computer.
733mhz GeForce2Ti 512MBRam

Most default maps are playable. My InstallationXY15 map runs better on UT2004 than in RedFaction on my old computer at the same resolution
