Hmm my CD RW drive just decided it doesn't recognize blank CD's anymore... It still reads CD's with stuff on them, but if I put in a blank CD then try to open the folder so I can paste stuff then write it to cd it either says, "Insert Disk" or "Incorrect Function" and wont open the folder even when theres a disk already in the drive... Or if I go the long way by going through Nero, when I get to the burn step it says insert disk even though theres one already in there... and it doesn't make a difference if I pull out the disk and put it back in or put in a new disk...

Anyone have any ideas why my CD RW drive isn't working right?

Have you only tryed the one type opf blank disc? as maybe the disks are crap or you got a bad batch or something.

Also how long have you had the drive as it may just be dying and you may be up for a new one.

Other than that i have no idea

Installed any games that have StarForce on recently? Its a possible alternative reason...

In the entertainment industry's infinite wisdom they've experimented with various types of copy protection.

Starforce is one of the 'better' ones, in that it took well over 6 months for pirated copies of the first games to sport it to hit the net for download. In the world of copied games thats a lifetime.

Trouble is Starforce was originally a driver that installed itself on your system and generally whilst good at making sure you were running a legit copy with a legit CD... it would also (on occasion) royally mess up any DVD/CD burning software and/or drives because someone thought that anyone with a CD burner was a pirate and therefore needed their drives screwing over. Maybe not intentionally... but its what happened

Its got better, newer versions of SF are no longer driver based, its still a pain but as usual copy protection only harms legitimate users because there is always a way around CP for game pirates... nothing is 100% proof... but those of us who buy the games just get lumped with it.

Please read... 'early versions of starforce used drivers', that implies that newer versions do not. If you have GTA:SA, by your own searching you have Starforce installed.

If you dont have the driver version installed all you have to do to get rid of it is uninstall the games that come with it. Although I will say its unlikely to be causing the problem with your drive.

It's either a bad drive or you have a batch of unformatted disks. Without formatting a disk will be unreadable in any form. You cannot read a blank UNFORMATTED disk. Blank and unformatted are not the same thing.

Don't get me wrong, blank disks are normally formatted. That does not mean that this batch was. It could be that the factory forgot to format them. Try a disk from another batch or try these disks on a drive that you works.

Just a few suggestions.
Reality; what a concept.

Now that I think of it, the last time I burnt a CD was October 23 because i still had the cover saved on my comp and thats the date it was created. and I had GTA:SA since a couple of weeks after it came out which was way before october 23. so it stopped working somewhere between oct 23 and NOV 13...Hmm I can't think of anything I would of done between then that would make my cd burner not work right...
