im making a pretty detailed map (planet namek) and i did some things, i putted water in it i clicked build and after waiting long, i get to c THIS:



does any1 know how to solve this problem ????

You broke one of the most important rules of RED. Don't pinwheel a surface more than 2 times it gets ugly fast. Another rule you definatley broke is do not have un needed faces and vertices in places you dont need them, like the walls and roof of the map.

for building terrain maps why dont you just make a big box for making the playing area then adding a thin brush with multiple splits, then when your done with the terrain drag the bottom set of the thin faces to the bottom of the big box and start merging vertices and faces.

The editor can't handle too many faces in one room, where are your portals? Looks like the smooth mesh function on the brushes has been done about 4-5 times or more. That mesh function must be used very sparingly, Red was only designed to produce low level graphics for low-end machines which means we must work with less face count and work in low detail because of the limitations that were set for low-end machines...

I wish the designers of this editor would increase red's face count capacities to at least 50,000 or higher for the high-end machines that we now have that are capable of rendering thousands of faces and polygons and whatever so then you can make the brushes more detailed.

BTW, how do we know that the REDHELP has been updated with new stuff if Violition don't mention what VERSION of the help file is made avaliable for download ?

Well according to most people, THQ gave orders to volition to no longer offer support to red faction and i dont think it will be updated, but i would always like to see one of our many talented mappers to finish it off!

lmao when I look at the thumb image I only see red colors going on,
that map must look similar to the one of this thread [RED]Crashed when..

You've done wayyy too much cutting. As D2k mentioned, even the walls are splitted up horizontally which is not needed, but pushes the face count extremely.

I think you've messed up that map..

Dont you have 3dsmax? You should try it that way, and use Soft Selection technique.

topspins, just let us all change the game UT2k4 or FarCry for example. We'll all be happy with their limitations!
edit: I have made a FarCry map with lego bricks. () I've got 19fps (which is almost ok) with 500,000 faces in my view. Or was it polys?! I took a screenshot of it!
I thought it was impossible when I saw that..

Of course the textures aren't high detailed, thats why it worked. But it was still impressive, RF can't even handle a sheet

Yeah there is, goto File >New

I think that's your best bet to be honest... wouldn't take you too long to create some terrain similar to this but in the proper way

i could, put 50 face brushes in a air brush with 10X10X10, MAKE SURE THE FACES ARNT DETAIL!
