Now once I've burnt my finished maps on a cd. How do I get Red Faction to autoload all my custom maps one by one from the cd as I play through my maps, as I don't need them on the hdd anymore, does anyone know? It would be nice to load my finished levels from CD. |

Sacrelidge! No room for RF maps on your HD - your CD's for RF should be taken from you and never returned. |
If I ever get to where I am going, will I know when I am there? |

I'm doing single player maps, but you should be able to multiload not just from HDD but from the cd-drive as well...I can't see why Red shouldn't accept a drive pathname for the cd drive in the Load-level event when loading in the maps from cd. It should work and start loading my levels from my CD. But if the editor don't even recognize a cd-drive path filename and only recognizes a hdd filename well, another limitation. |

Actually, if you knew coding and knew how RF system worked, you could modify it a tad to load maps from both multi folder and a designated drive, or just the designated drive. I myself don't know how to decode a system such as RF! lol |

The CD/DVD Rom drive is not as fast as your HD. When I had many maps on my old computer it sometimes took ages until the create server screen opened. Because the game reads all the information of the rfls in the vpps.
But after I bought a new PC, I noticed this HD was a piece of ... because its slower than my brain. (while I'm asleep, of course )
It's a nice idea, but the seek times are way too slow for this.
If you had seen an open CD drive and a HD drive while they're running, you'd have seen very quickly why |

I know this doesn't answer your question, but its something for future reference:
You can use a free installation program (we programmers are notorious for creating free stuff for our uses, just to stick it to the Man), I'd recommend Clickteam's Install Creator (I think they still have the Pro version free, if not the Standard version will still suit you), or Nullsoft's install script (whatever it's formally called), although it is more complicated (designed for programmer use).
Anyway, you burn your files to the CD, then start the installation routine. Drill down through the menus and specify paths and stuff as needed. Now, if you did it right, you should be able to install all your customs from a CD (if you have enough disk space).
A novel idea would be to parse (separate) the installation files through folders (easiest way to parse, as most installation programs install full directories, so individually selecting them all wouldn't be fun or even possible in some cases) on the disk, and create installation engines for each of them. Now, whenever you feel like playing a pack, make sure there's room and install just that pack. This way you won't have to worry about disk space (well, beyond what the actual pack would have) and you still have them on disk. Then, if you want to install them all, just run through all the installation routines and they'll all be there.

Sorry "that guy", but your links were wack. I had to fix them. |

I was going to say try making "Shortcuts" from the CD to your Multimaps folder or Singlemaps folder, but that wont work because shortcuts are a different file extension to what RF uses. But the other guys comment above me seems quite advanced... Try going with his idea.
I back up my maps onto CD-RW so that I can write new ones to the CD when I need to.
Here's a bright idea (Just sprung to my head but I recon its stupid). Get a USB drive... big enough to fit Red Faction on. Install Red Faction to the USB drive and put your maps in their desinated folders on the USB device. Presto! you dont need RF on your computers hard drive anymore... and you can carry it around with you too |

Seriousily, are the custom maps of RF that big?
I've heard it often enough that people were saying the game doesn't work anymore, so they had to remove maps.
I guess even a maximum of 1GB is enough for many maps, and with a HD of 14GB you can still have other things installed.
Or do you need more space for your *cough* ..videos?
You could try to unpack some VPPs and pack those files into one vpp. That way some popular textures might get saved only once. Not 60 times in each different vpp. But that might be fatal when you want to remove a single level (you could only delete the rfl because you dont know its textures anymore), and some of the lvl ressources stay unused after that.. |

Yes REDFROG, I need my "special videos for nightime viewing", it is what keeps me from mentally watching the videos in public (ever see a person who's a complete vetird about women, so he'll make stupid jokes, which she obviously hears. If that guy would watch a little more of those "vidoes" he wouldn't have the pent-up desire driving him to make a complete vetird of himself).
Actually, if you kept the stuff on DVD, it would work just as good as USB key, but at far less the cost (if you have a DVD burner, that is). Otherwise, expect about 200 - 500 usd for the GB USB key you'd need to buy to put RF on.
Also, I see my link is broken at the bottom of my last post. I can't figure out where I went wrong (same format, <url=clickteam.com>Clickteam </url>and <url=nsis.sourceforge.net>Nullsoft Scriptable Install System </url>. Substitute brackes for the <>signs (didn't want to trip the forumcode and hide all that I wrote, meaning those who wanted to copy and paste the link couldn't)).
Hi Spikey2005, my name is Vidi44, not "that guy" (I don't like it when people don't bother to read the name of the person they're referring to, its on the side of the forum). I like to write long, but informative posts and spend my time mapping for RF or programming (in any of 4 languages: BASIC, Visual BASIC, C++, and C. I'm currently in the process of learning Turing OOT that DVL_IAC so gratefully lists on his website. C++ and C aren't my best languages (I know enough to write and debug most code with it, but not enough to say I actually know the language)).
We should have a thread where we all introduce ourselves (even the veteran members. We'd start with Garner and the staff, then open the thread to the public). |

External HardDrives easy to use and they dont cost that much, act just like reg thumb drives just bigger
Thumb drives a tad more costly but well worth the portability
