I normally don't bother with posting about new tutorials ... but this one is special.
There has been another really informative lighting tutorial submission from reaper_47 showing you how to get some great effects from particle emitters. A wonderful new effect for all to try.
Plasma Beams, Rocket Flares, Bunsen Burners, Black Holes and Warp Lights.

Looks great but like its stated on the tutorial
Quoting From the tutorial | Always remember the method described in this tutorial uses a _lot_ of particles. Each particle needs a transparency effect which is quite a complex thing to render for your graphics card, especially when there are many transparent objects close to each other. The more particles there are, the bigger they are or the closer the player gets to them the slower the game will run. |
This is only useful\good if the mapper is shooting for beauty and not gameplay. |

I think visuals are a huge part of the gameplay.. these sorts of things make red faction look like something better! |

Quoting ranswer | This is only useful\good if the mapper is shooting for beauty and not gameplay. | Your barking up the wrong tree. What you have quoted goes for any particle emitter. Surely you knew that. Use them wisely and you can have a great new edition to your maps.
Isn't beuaty a part of gameplay? I won't buy a game/download a map if it looks like crap ... I buy/download it because it looks good and fun to play.
Hey Beaton. Shame the K isn't around anymore, now there was some quick wit. |

Nice one.
I haven't read it yet, but it looks like these effects are done with many fast spawning particles, isnt it? What happens if you create too many of them?
I just got one idea on this.
Instead of faking light sources, why not use the light sources of the clutter lights?
You say: But I dont want to use this mesh for this type of light source.
I say: swap the textures of the clutter to an invisible texture. The mesh will go, the corona stays. (I hope)
I know there are many negative aspects..
-you need to know how the effect of the light looks like
-it is more work
-particle emitters are much easier to handle then clutter lights, because the corona will be only visible in-game
it was just a though
edit:
yup I tested it. The framerate gets extremly killed by these particle emitters. The spawn delay should have been higher.
There are 2 emitters on top of the level, if I activate them for some seconds in RED, suddenly the view lags as hell with maybe 1 frame per second because of hundrets of particles that need to be rendered.
But I always knew my graphics card isn't good at rendering particles, I really hate that. |
