omg, another discovery 2 days later... hehe


this time its semi-transparent vbms on brushes
this is copyed from the document im submitting to REDTECH:



First off if you need to know how to make a vbm, see Ranswer3’s Tutorial.

After you have your vbm created with some transparency in them add that file to your maps3.vpp, also add the same file to your user_mapstextures directory.
Go into RED editor, your texture will be under Custom. Notice anything different? You can see the file in the preview window . apply it and apply map to a solid brush with “is detail” checked. Build. Now you should see transparency in the brush. If you want to know how to make this a mover, see my Transparent Movers tutorial.

well what i do it press Alt+Ctrl+PrtScn and then go into MS paint and go Edit->Paste works fine every time

and yea thanks exo, anyone know anything else i can try to crack?? ( except vehicles in multi..tryed, failed pathetically) (i really mean it, my computer crashed lol. had to get a new board )

Whats the 2nd discovery now?
Transparent vbms work on movers, too? If TGAs work everything else does...


Vbms can be viewed in RED not only by adding them to the maps3.vpp
Why maps3? why not maps2? or 1? or ui.vpp? or a mod vpp?

You see, no discovery there


I have tryed out your cool discovery with the transparent mover, its really great. I just cant think any use of it but that doesnt matter.
Probably doors with some glass would be cool.
I dont know why you were talking about that transparent movers have no projectile collision. I have used a glass texture the first time and was confused that I had collisions..so "glass textures" will work.

To solve this problem on other textures add the prefix gls_ to the texturename. One problem remains tough, the impact sounds will be glass sounds.

The whole thing makes no sense to me, its one of the strangest bugs in RF
Transparency is not "offically" supported on movers, I dont think even Volition knows about this. It makes no sense to "not-cut" a keyframed brush (which was previosily set to Detail) which then suddenly works with alpha maps. Its funny and strange at once

oh well i dunno, but REDFROG, ninja was complaining that he couldnt get semi-transparent vbms on brushes, so i got this.

glass textures work indeed.. but anything else will go straight through it

well bullets go through most parts of detail brushes anyway

I have used this nice trick in one of my maps
A ladder with a 32bit texture that moves together with a crane, it works
I could have used a mesh..ok.. but that'd take more ressources and not to forget its more work. And it is a very small thing only..

I bet nobody will even notice maps with transparent movers. Its like they've always been there.
