Should there be a L4Y server for Red Faction that runs on 1.3?If so who will donate their second computer? |

well the thing is, if someone were to host a l4y dedicated server, it would have to be for 32 people or it would get full too fast, therefore the host must have a very top end computer.
ill see if i can find enough parts around this house to build one. ill get back to you on that.
like will it be DM or CTF or something else like run maps? like pick the best l4y maps to host on the server.  |

Goober, you wouldn't need a top end machine to run a decent server. You mainly need a good connection such as T3, T4, or a DC or OC line. Also, your pc just needs to be able to have RF installed and playable, that should be enough power. However, RAM would be best  |

I highly doubt you'll get 32 people in a server  You'd be luckey if you got 16 people at a time playing. I have a P4 2 GHz, 512 RAM Laptop I could host a server on and I got a 3mb/600kb Wireless High Speed connection. But I do download alot so the server might get laggy at times But I don't think starting a new server at this day and age in Red Faction will do to good... I just checked and theres a total of 13 DM servers with people in them and the one with the most people only has 10. and 5 out of the 13 only have 1 person in them...  So I highly doubt a new server would get very much people playing in it.

I don't think you need that high of a connection just to run a RF server a regular DSL or Cable connection would probably do. |

frank and mightymike are kinda running a server sometime. We won't get anything closer to a l4y server than a server run by a RF staff on l4y. |

It is a sad testimony that during the work week in the wee hours of the night when I get home from work that there are up to seventy servers running but only three to seven of them have visitors.
Honestly I would recommend the opposite. Instead of more servers we should start consolidating our resources. I have lame dsl and would be more than happy to surrender my server and choice of maps to someone who has a superior internet connection. Although I still like the theme and title of Dinner is Served - but I would be willing to sacrifice it for the good of our community. |

I totally agree with that, the problem lies in that people always want custom maps then they join a server and boom, they get kicked because they don't have them. 
I fired up my Red Faction server but it's only running default maps right now. I have it set to 14 player in Death Match mod. I only have a 768 upload and a tiny 3000 download speed, it should be enough since I am able to run a decent UT2004 server with 10 people, beyond that the connection will lag. Red Faction doesn't require as much upload speed as UT2004, so I can actually run more people, but for DM I think that is more than enough. Any way, the server PC is a P4 2.4Ghz with 1Gig 3200 DDR ram. 
It's called level4you.com server™. 
Voting is enabled, so if the map is on the folder and you know the rfl file name then go ahead and change the map. Just be warned, you might kick some players when you do it. 
Sometimes I would rather play default maps with people in the server than to play by myself in a custom level. Playing by oneself should never been done, I heard that you could go blind, you know from staring at the screen in hopes that you see another player on the server and not the other thing. |

Ok what about 2 L4Y servers?One runs on all the default DM maps while one runs on the most top 20 downloaded custom DM maps.Does anyone agree? |

Have fun usually has a lot of player. It's a GREAT server but the draw back is that they only play defaults but hey sometimes that is better than nothing. In return, I don't think they are asking for anything. I have nothing really bad to say about that server, then again I have hardly ever played there but when I have, it's been fun. It's always fun to play with other but I still prefer DM to CTF or TDM. Unless it's UT2004 then it has to be VCTF. |
