Greetings gentle Forum wanderers,

Mechs.Crossfire causes player's PCs to crash. It has even caused my dedicated server to crash twice in the past month. Anybody else had a problem with this level? Any way around this mischievous bug?

No other maps cause problems like this, except the original version of 4Towers. I have no choice but to pull it from rotation. I have not examined the map in RED, but I suspect there are remaining double brushes. ie; blast out a window pane to discover there is a second pane unblasted.

NoClanFrank, what is the process for ammending a previously posted map pack and removing this dangerous file?

Just leave as it is. I've never had that map crashed.
Any way, all you really need to do is not run that map and "your" problem should be solved.

If you really want me to replaced the file:
1. Upload the new map pack to the FTP with a new file name.
2. [Don't fill out the upload page]
3. PM me with the exact file name and I ca replace the file.

Pay very close attention to number 2, if you do it, I will be force to delete it completly and you will also have to dop the upload again.

Thanks man! Your instructions will be followed.

Honestly, I am floored that this level will, one out of eight times, cause players PCs to just bomb out of the program. My wonderous server has only floped twice in the past month, on this map. I am stupified! On LAN only games, filled to capacity, it does not crash. Why over the internet? A tragic setback.

Indeed it is tragic, after all I did play that map when I was in your server and not once did it crash nor was there any mention of the said computers crashing.
P.S. What's up with that.

I have played in this server on this map a few times now and have not crashed. I did however see 2 other players kicked at the exact same time before in this map ... so maybe it does happen
P.S. Still Alive.

Yes it does happen in a terribly frustrating manner. Players computers bomb out of RF and eventually the server kicks em due to broken connection.

On a lighter note, I spent 14 hours in the shop today, subconsciously thinking about RF. I have decided to leave map pack alone and save folks the hassle. I will also endevour to find out whats goin on by conducting tests for 48 hrs starting Saturday morning.

The first computer I used as a server used OS 9.2.2 with 400 MHZ processor, G3 Powerbook. The computer I am using now uses OS 10.4 with 1.42 GHZ processor, a G4 Mac Mini I picked up for super cheap. The framerate is way better and lag is diminished greatly. Too bad it has an achilles heel.

OH!-

I am an underdog what can I say. Give me the status quo and I wanna turn it upside down and inside out! Honestly, stop by some time and check out the performance of my diminuitive server with the maps that work.

I just tried but the server was locked.
It's also renamed, it's now called:

Dinner Chef Test

Whoops! I'm bad!

Dinner Chef Test (one thru six) are the testing grounds. The crashes occur when the majority of windows are broken in the map, I haven't figured out the exact number it takes to bomb program. There are 192 total windows in map.

Forget about error codes - purile gibberish.

I spent Friday night-early Saturday AM running isolated (locked out) tests on my 6 Macs and one PC to see if it was a local problem. They all crash.

Dinner Chef Test Seven is now open today, Saturday afternoon central USA time, to the public. I redownloaded Mechs.Crossfire off the deathmatch listing, not from the map pack. It was a good download, it should be free of corruption. Then any visitors can witness the crashing. BTW - I am using my PC not a Mac to host this red carpet event.

Dinner is Served is open all the time on the weekends. Thats the one you gotta check out for zippy performance.

Profuse apologies for any misunderstanding....

Update Sunday Morning: I ran Dinner Chef Test Seven and crashed the computers of other visiting players - when too many windows were blasted out. It was a gruesome way to prove a theory. Even better, Frank put up his server and then we crashed it vandalizing the windows.

I wanted to make sure for you, so I played the map and counted each window I shot. I counted 143 and shot out the 144th window..... RF crashed to desktop......... It is an issue with either RF not being able to handle all the glass or it's a bug/glitch in the map.

I might also add that it only happens when you break them without any real pause. You know like a mad man.

Hey thanks guys for your help. I wasn't sure what was cookin' but I knew something was wrong and I was hoping that it wasn't isolated to the RF for Mac.

Buyah!

PS: It stands to reason that when playing RF - stuff is gonna get broken by those frenzied into destructive madness. LordSeafood always blows out the ramps in CorporateHQ. When finally demolished he heroicaly declares, "My work here is finished!"
